GSP

The pressure intensifies after GoSL sent another high-level team to the EU in an attempt to prevent the loss of the GSP+ Tax concession. As predicted GoSL has been busy trying to deflect criticism by carrying out action deliberately designed to encourage EU (and other) waverers to back off Sri Lanka e.g. setting up a "commission on lessons learned and reconciliation", relaxing the Emergency Laws etc. All 'bogus' and designed to impede action being taken against SL.

If you haven't already please send to relevant EU delegates the letter below:

Dear MEP,

I am aware that Sri Lanka recently sent a delegation to the EU in an attempt to block the loss of the generous GSP+ tax concession we as EU taxpayers give them.

As you will know they are due to lose this (temporarily) because of their failures to adhere to three International Covenants namely, Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), the Convention against Torture (CAT) and the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC).

I realise that Sri Lanka is desperately trying to persuade the EU to back down by throwing it some crumbs e.g. releasing some camp inmates, setting up a "lessons learned and reconciliation" commission and partially relaxing the Emergency Laws. In reality of course these are piecemeal i.e. gestures rather than full blown and reversible. I believe they have made similar promises on investigations before which lead to nothing. Ask yourself if members of the Government have been involved in War Crimes would they investigate themselves and produce an honest report?

I would urge you to ensure, on behalf of human rights and EU taxpayers, that the GSP+ is withdrawn. Only in this way will Sri Lanka really sit up and take notice.
