Your Excellency,
Re: Victims of War and their families in Sri Lanka have been denied truth and justice for too long:
We, The Tamil Canadian Elders for Human Rights appreciate your statements to the United Nations in the 3rd Committee of the 66th session.
"The promotion and protection of human rights, a cornerstone of this organization, is a central pillar of Canada’s foreign policy. Canada stands firmly on the protection of human rights and takes principled positions on important issues to promote freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law. —-"
"Justice cannot and should not be bartered for anything else" It seems that many victims of the war believed that the LLRC would actually give them immediate solutions to their problems. The chief amongst these problems are finding out what happened to their loved ones who went missing and being compensated for what they had lost. The thousands who sought to give evidence before the LLRC in the North and East did not do so simply to provide it with information for analysis and posterity. They also wanted their problems solved. Faced with the absence of any alternative problem-solving governmental mechanism, they were hoping
that their detailed evidence would help the LLRC to find out what had actually happened to their loved ones. They wanted to know if those who were missing were alive or dead, and if alive where they were. They also wanted to get adequate compensation for their lost property and livelihoods to make a fresh start.
On the other hand, the LLRC’s mandate was difficult. It was not to investigate and find solutions to the problems of individuals. The LLRC was not equipped with the investigative machinery for this endeavour.
The voices of the voiceless are hardly ever heard internationally unless human rights defenders are ready to face the consequences – even sacrifice their life. Tragic and typical examples of this, have been the assassination of many Human Rights Defenders, Parliamentarians, Journalists and countless others by the Sri Lankan Government. [Late Mr. Joseph Pararajasingam MP, Late Mr. Raviraj MP, Late Mr. Kumar Ponnambalam Human rights Activist, Late Mylvaganam Nimalarajan BBC Reporter Journalist, Late Mr. Sivaram [Taraki] Editor Tamilnet, Journalist, Late Mr. Lasanta Wickremasingha, Editor Sunday Leader, Journalist, and many others]
The government of Sri Lanka cleverly spends massive amounts of money on malicious international propaganda. Human rights defenders are in the firing line! Those in foreign countries need no bunkers! What we all need is moral courage and hard work. We most earnestly request you to call for an Independent International Investigation by the United Nation.
We most respectfully request you to take necessary steps to include Sri Lankas War crimes issue in the forthcoming UN Human rights council scheduled to meet in March 2012. We also request you to discuss this with other democratic countries and get support to call for an Independent Intenational Investigation in to the GENOCIDE, War Crimes, Crimes against humanity rape etc. Thank you your Excellency, We remain,
Yours Truly,
