Hon. John Baird, M.P
Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada

Dear Sir,

The world Tamil community joined with Tamil Canadians is very grateful and appreciates the Canadian Foreign Minister, Hon. John Baird’s courage and commitment that he is showing against gross human right violations and genocide being committed by the government of Sri Lanka against its minority Tamils.

We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your bold statement regarding the LLRC report which is falls far short of human rights violations and crimes against the humanity committed by the Sri Lankan government. The LLRC report dismisses any notion of a ‘systematic’, ‘persecution’ of Tamil civilians by Sri Lanka’s armed forces and the ‘deliberate’ targeting of civilian establishments – key assertions made by the UN expert panel.

For the war crimes, the defence secretary, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the then head of the army, General Sarath Fonseka, and the commander in chief – the president – Mahinda Rajapaksa are principally answerable. It’s fruitless to ask the war criminals to investigate their own war crimes.

What is needed urgently is an International Independent investigation into the gross human right violations and genocide being committed by the government of Sri Lanka till then Canada and other like minded democratic countries should impose sanctions as the one initiated by Canada against South African Apartheid Regime on December 20th, 1977.

We also earnestly request Canada to lobby for support to pass a resolution for an International Independent investigation in the next United Nations Human rights Council meeting which is schedule to take place on March 2012.

Thank you once again.

Yours Respectfully,

P. Kanapathy,
