The Honourable Dalton McGuinty, Premier of Ontario, The Honourable M.A. Sumanthiran, Member of Parliament representing the Tamil National Alliance in Sri Lanka, Distinguished guests, Valued members, community partners, and Ladies and gentlemen – on behalf of the Canadian Tamil Congress, I am delighted to welcome you to our 5th Annual Thai Pongal Dinner Gala.

Thai Pongal is a time of thanksgiving.

We are thankful for your contributions of time, energy and financial resources that have strengthened the voice of Tamil Canadians both at the national and international levels. We are particularly thankful for the leadership demonstrated by all of our political leaders, and in particular, The Right Honourable Prime Minster Stephan Harper, and the Honourable John Baird, Minister of Foreign Affairs with respect to Canada’s principled stand on Sri Lanka.

We achieved a great deal in 2011. From raising $50,000 for Amnesty International, to donating blood to our fellow Canadians, and continuing to advocate for local and international issues, CTC remains committed to its mandate.

2012, looks equally promising.

We will continue to engage politicians on issues of concern to all Canadians. CTC is also taking initial steps to develop a Tamil Cultural Centre. We will continue our international advocacy work, along with our partners, to ensure accountability and peace in Sri Lanka. We have very ambitious goals for this community and it is with YOUR ongoing support that we can keep pushing at the rate that we are. We hope to see your continued interest and financial support in the future.

I have been with CTC for several years and have seen the organization grow and prosper; I have seen passion like I’ve never seen before; I have seen our youth become leaders; and I have seen the level of volunteer commitment taken to another level. We encourage you to join our team and be a part of this growth so we can ensure that we have a stronger and more unified presence in Canada.

As CTC embarks upon a new year, with new beginnings, opportunities and challenges ahead of us, we will take a confident step forward knowing that we can count on YOUR support to help us move forward.

On behalf of everyone at the Canadian Tamil Congress, I would like to wish you and your family a very happy Thai Pongal and a 2012 filled with joy, good health and prosperity.

Thank you.

Mr. Suntharamoorthy Umasuthan
