UNP Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa and Leader of the New Left Front, Dr. Wickremabahu Karunarathne were in an ideological clash at a discussion held on the 6th to decide on the steps to be taken to secure Sarath Fonseka’s release.

The meeting was presided by Premadasa and held at UNP Western Provincial Councilor Shiral Lakthileka’s residence. Fonseka’s wife, Anoma Fonseka also participated in the meeting.

The steps to be taken to secure Fonseka’s release and the key issues faced by people were discussed at length at the meeting.

It was decided to protest against the government over 10 issues including the agitation to secure Fonseka’s release, human rights and workers’ issues.

Fonseka’s supporters have said that including many issues would not give prominence to the struggle to secure Fonseka’s release and therefore it would be good to choose a few issues to include in the struggle to free Fonseka.

Dr. Karunaratne has said that fighting only for Fonseka’s relase would make it a communal issue and therefore the campaign should be launched under the theme, “Free Fonseka and all political prisoners.”

Angered by the comment, Premadasa had said he would not participate in any protest organized by Tiger supporters and would not fight for the release of terrorist supporters. He had walked out of the meeting after making this statement.

Lakthileka had gone after Premadasa and had brought him back to the meeting.

Although ideas had been exchanged no final decision had been made on the next course of action.

UNP’s Dayasiri Jayasekera, Rosy Senanayake, Buddhika Pathirana and Ashok Abeysinghe, TNA MP M.A. Sumanthiran, DNA MP Arjuna Ranatunge and Siritunge Jayasuriya have attended the meeting.

Also civil society activists Keerthi Tennekoon, Ravi Kumudesh and Anoma Rajakarunanayake had also participated at the meeting.

A dinner was also organized after the meeting
