Dear Friends,

A big thank you to everyone who attended Freedom from Torture’s public debate on 25 November on the UK‘s role in ending torture and impunity in Sri Lanka. We had engaging speakers on the panel and a packed audience. You can watch the footage of the event at the link below.

Campaign update! Since the event the UK Border Agency has issued a Bulletin updating their country of origin information on Sri Lanka, used as part of the information to determine an asylum application, based on recent submissions made by organisations including Freedom from Torture to the United Nations Committee against Torture. The Bulletin also includes the ‘Concluding Observations’ issued by the Committee, which highlights its concern regarding reports of ongoing torture being perpetrated in Sri Lanka.

The fact that the information has been updated at this stage, rather than at the review point in January, is a positive development and indicates that the UK Border Agency has taken seriously the new evidence available and its importance for deciding asylum claims and in particular the risk of return to torture (that has been noted recently).

Thank you to all those who have already signed the petition calling on the UK government to ensure refused asylum seekers are not returned to torture in Sri Lanka and to use its influence in the international community to bring an end to torture an impunity. We still need people to sign this action though so please share it as widely as possible including with your networks, friends and family or link to Freedom from Torture’s page on your website at http://www.freedomfromtorture.org/feature/news_feature/5915

Freedom from Torture, a registered charity established in 1985, is the only organisation in the UK dedicated solely to the treatment of torture survivors. Since its inception, over 50,000 people have been referred to us for help.

Freedom from Torture recently published Out of the Silence, a new report documenting evidence of ongoing torture in Sri Lanka, continuing long after the end of the country’s civil war in 2009. After submitting this evidence to the United Nations Committee Against Torture, the Committee concluded that it is “seriously concerned about the continued and consistent allegations of widespread use of torture” and urged follow-up action from the government of Sri Lanka. Despite ongoing concerns over risks of torture in Sri Lanka, including to Tamils returning to the country, the UK government continues to remove refused Sri Lankan asylum seekers, with a charter flight planned for 15 December. Join Freedom from Torture and raise your voice to demand accountability for Sri Lankan torture survivors and urge that individuals are not forcibly returns without adequate safeguards.
