On September 18, 2011, Tamil Canadians and friends participated in a community walk-a-thon in support of Amnesty International, a worldwide movement of people dedicated to the protection and promotion of human rights.

50 Years of Human Rights Work – Join in at www.AI50.ca
50 years ago, something amazing happened when Peter Benenson, a British lawyer, wrote an article calling for the release of two Portuguese students imprisoned for drinking a toast to freedom. Because one person spoke out and turned his disgust into action for change, Amnesty International—a worldwide movement of more than three million members—was born. Amnesty members have helped release tens of thousands of people who had been imprisoned for their beliefs or their way of life. They have ended the death penalty in dozens of countries and helped bring human rights abusers to account. Amnesty members have changed laws and lives.
You and the people you have inspired to join our movement will join with activists around the world to take actions on our anniversary campaigns. From increasing maternal health, to abolishing the death penalty and instituting corporate accountability, these will be actions on which concerted global action – human rights ‘people power’ – can really make a difference. And even more importantly, they will be human rights campaigns that WE CAN WIN!
Once you have completed your walk, please join in at www.AI50.ca and invite everyone you know to do the same.
