Dec 10, Colombo: Sri Lanka’s major Tamil political party, the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) asked the government to reveal the list of names of ex-LTTE cadres and supporters who are detained or in custody.

TNA parliamentarian Suresh Premachandran has said that a large number of former LTTE cadres had surrendered to the security forces and had been arrested as well.

He has told the parliament that the government had announced that around 12,000 former LTTE cadres had surrendered to the security forces during the final stages of the war but their families have not received any information on them.

He has noted that parents and relatives of former LTTE members wanted to know about their family members in custody.

"The government needs to tell, whether it is going to take legal action against these people or if they will be released," Premachandran has claimed.

"The government needs to give details about the people being detained. The President needs to intervene and address this issue," he has added.

According to Premachandran, persons like Kumaran Pathmanathan alias KP who were directly involved in the LTTE’s decision making and fighting machinery are being entertained by the government while the poor people who followed their orders are being detained since the end of the war.

The government has said that during and immediately after the final phase of the war in May 2009, 11,664 LTTE cadres have surrendered to the government security forces.

Commissioner General for Rehabilitation, Major General Chandana Rajaguru last month said currently there are 680 former LTTE members in the rehabilitation centers in the country.
