Colombo – The US government Tuesday expressed concern over the blocking of anti-government websites in Sri Lanka.

The US Embassy in Colombo called on Sri Lankan authorities and the managements of Sri Lankan telecommunications firms to stop activities aimed at blocking free access in Sri Lanka to all legitimate media websites.

The statement came after the anti-government Lanka-e-News website was blocked.

‘While the embassy does not endorse the views of any particular media outlet, the United States believes that a free and independent media is vital to ensuring the health and continuation of any democracy’, the embassy said.

‘Freedom of expression, including unfettered access to Internet news websites, is a basic right which must be respected’, the statement added.

The Tamilnet website, which was previously a pro-Tamil rebel website, has been blocked for the past two and half years.

Does Sri Lanka complain when a suspected Al-Queida site is taken down by the US? There is enough evidence to confirm that the Lanka-e-News was a pro-LTTE terrorist site and that it did everything possible to stop the humanitarian-war (i.e. to liberate over 300,000 Tamils who were being kept hostage and starved to death by the LTTE to save their own skin) the GOSL carried out against the LTTE. In the US not only this type of site would be shut down, but he owners/editors would face severe punishment under the US’ Homeland Security laws!

What a funny story.USA talking about media freedom. What about Wikileaks website and Julian ? Shut it down, shut it down, shut it down drama!

I think this US people are crazy. They forget what they have done yesterday or last month. All the people around the world know that western countries only publish what benefit to them. Western media outlet websites are highly bias and hide the truth from public every bit. They are bunch of shameless journalists. There are no free media there. As an example Australian media is full of rubbish and do not reveal anything about government corruption. If they publish anything against government ,even truth, then next day its license in danger. So, that is why they publish rubbish about other countries and ask media freedom there. Remember that shut it down ,shut it down, shut it down….drama in USA white house.

    Herby Padmaaperuma.

What some of the so called newspapers publish is absolute bullshit. No News but character assignation, distorted facts, filth and pure thras, in addition to seditious writing and represents pure prostitution in holy journalism. Will USA permit the publication of any Al-quia-da or anti American journal. Authorities have a right to take suitable action even leniently; as what has been done presently after due consideration and thought , to contain polution of the reading public.

USA mind your own business. We Srilankans are capable of deciding what is good for us. President was elected by the people of Sri lanka and not the Americans.
