Three of Sri Lanka’s international venues, including the newly built stadiums in Pallekele and Hambantota, have been handed over to the military indefinitely because Sri Lanka Cricket is unable to afford the maintenance costs.
The R Premadasa stadium in Colombo – redeveloped for the World Cup earlier this year – is being taken by the air force. The navy has taken over the Pallekele Stadium, near Kandy, while the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium in Hambantota has gone to the army.
"We are doing this because we are not in a position to afford the maintenance costs," Brian Thomas, Sri Lanka Cricket’s media manager, said. "The military is responsible for the grounds from this month."
The grounds in Hambantota and Pallekele, built at a combined cost of nearly US$ 11.79m, were finished just before the World Cup, which Sri Lanka co-hosted with India and Bangladesh. The R Premadasa Stadium was renovated at a cost of nearly US$8m. The country hosted 12 matches in the tournament.
The World Cup had left Sri Lanka Cricket in debt to the tune of $23 million thanks to cost overruns and heavy expenses incurred in building the stadiums, and the board had to ask for a grant from the Sri Lanka government. The board has not paid some of its players since the tournament.

@ Saikrishnan Baskaran: u r spot on mate.Those SL fans are just here for fun.Most of them don’t understand what International cricket means.I was shocked when I saw the comments of Sanga and MJ abt India’s Rankings on NDTV.I thought the two might have been crazy.

@ Freddie flintoff – when do you start your role as a comedian as your comments make me laugh..no cricket fans In Sri Lanka?no,not many fans of test cricket but you will not fund a seat at an odi- I should know I was there in august..we have more cricket fans than England as its our main sport..you will also not find fans with passion in England as we support our team,win or lose…there is much more to cricket than tests and thats way its the dying form of the game..

Agree with serious-am-i and MENDIS_forever BCCI was always there for Srilanka right from organising Sri Lanka vs Tamil Nadu matches in the 60s and 70s, to organizing more number of tours to Sri Lanka to increase their revenue. In fact it was BCCI’s support which got Sri Lanka the test status. But all it got in return was hatred from Ranatunga and insults from Sangakarra like when he said India did not deserve number one rankings. Even the Sri Lankan fans too have joined in the BCCI bashing.

Sri Lankan cricket is struggling financially because there are no cricket fans in Sri Lanka any more. No matter what the media would want you to believe, I have NEVER seen a test match played in Sri Lanka which managed to draw a decent crowd. On the other hand almost every test match in England is played in front of a full house. Unless, the popularity of cricket grows, there is no future for Sri Lankan cricket.

Its sad to see SlC giving away their stadiums to Armed forces. I have seen users saying BCCI should help on it. But do u think u see a near possibility for that ? BCCI helped in the past and all they got was the negative remarks from players like Arjuna Ranatunga who was really upset on not getting selected as Indian coach after he sent in his nomination. KS & MJ did no favor either but because of their IPL contracts that ain’t a big issue. Now we have to see this as a commercial interest. If BCCI takes over stadium how are they going to monetize it ? The current status in India at present is too bad with a dismal viewership just like the last Ind-Eng series so how are they going to get viewers to travel to SriLanka to view matches. May be SLC must look at organizing any red carpet events of functions in the stadium to get the revenue running but this means they have to cover the entire grass field.
