Spain’s opposition People’s Party achieved a historic victory in the country’s general elections by garnering 43.3 percent of votes to defeat the ruling Socialist Party which gained 28.71 percent of votes, according to early results.
The results, released by Spain’s Interior Ministry after counting around 85 percent of ballots, showed that Mariano Rajoy’s People’s Party (PP) won a majority of 187 seats in Parliament versus 110 places for the Socialists.
The PP also won 126 seats in the Senate against 55 for the Socialists.
Turnout in the elections was 71.82 percent. It was 73.85 percent in the 2008 polls.
Prime Minister Jose Rodriguez Zapatero announced last July that presidential elections would be moved forward from its original date, next March, in a drive to boost political and economic stability.
