Act Now recently announced that it was to campaign in the Home Secretary’s constituency of Maidenhead from Saturday, December 3rd.

This was a result of further confirmation that Tamil refugees are being sent to Sri Lanka to face detention, surveillance and torture. Act Now has been aware for some time that this, due to our monitoring of refugees that have been deported, was happening. The recent report by the group Freedom from Torture (FFT), featured on C4 News and the Guardian, has further highlighted this reality. If you have not already done so check out their report by clicking on the link below to download it, click on Report, scroll down the page and download the PDF at http://www.freedomfromtorture.org/srilanka-report. Act Now supporters attended the FFT conference on this torture on Friday.

We have already been supporting those Tamil refugees seeking asylum and calling upon the Home Office to stop returning them back to certain abuse in Sri Lanka.

Unfortunately, the Government has ‘trapped itself’ by declaring Sri Lanka after the end of the conflict in May 2009, as a ‘safe country’. Under Government rules it is acceptable to deport refugees to ‘safe countries’.

All to Maidenhead! – Campaigning in Theresa May’s Constituency

So far, the Home Office and Minister’s are reluctant to admit their mistakes. We need to see what their voters think by turning up in their constituencies and letting local know just what is happening.

On Saturday, the 3rd December, Act Now is joining forces with Tamil Solidarity and others and will be start this campaign in Maidenhead (Theresa May’s home constituency). We shall, as with the Liam Fox campaign, be handing out thousands of leaflets, going door to door collecting petitions, working with the local media, handing out free DVDs of the documentary Sri Lanka’s Killing Fields and visiting the local churches and other religious groups.

Act Now Director’s, Tim Martin, Graham Williamson & Sockalingham Yogalingham are urging activists to attend to show their support and not to leave it to others!

Meeting place

We are meeting in Maidenhead at 11.00 am at entrance to Park Street of the High Street between HSBC and Santander (SL6 1JF) on Saturday Dec 3rd. We need help manning a stall and handing out flyer’s. Be there!
