A Manila court today issued a warrant for the arrest of former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo following the filing of electoral sabotage charges against her by the Commission on Elections (Comelec).
A Church-based poll monitor supported the charges, saying there is a need to “put closure to the anomalies during the 2004 and 2007 elections.”
The filing of charges was no surprise, according to former ambassador Henrietta de Villa, chairman of the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV) but the speed of the move was.
“Because of the recent circumstances, people may be wondering why it’s been so quick. But this does not mean to say that the electoral sabotage case is shocking. The people are expecting charges to be filed,” she said.
De Villa said the Church is expected to be divided again on this issue but people should be united in search for justice and truth.
“That is expected because while it is a church of God, body of Christ, it is also a human institution. There are various opinions; we feel differently and we have different perspectives,” De Villa said.
