International Efforts

ABERTZALE LEFT wants through this statement to recognize the work and efforts of the International Community to bring the Basque political conflict to a new scenario. During the last years we have seen an increasing on the international community involvement trying to help the last armed confrontation of Europe to enter in a new stadium. Today, after the International Conference to promote the Conflict Resolution in Basque Country hold in Donostia-San Sebastian the 17th of October, with the assistance of senior international figures like Kofi Annan, Bertie Ahern, Gerry Adams, Jonathan Powell, Pierre Joxe and Gro Harlem Burtland, which final Resolution was backed and endorsed by Tony Blair, Jimmy Carter and George Mitchell, the involvement of International Community trying to help to resolve the political conflict between the Basque Country and Spain is more clear than ever.

During the last years many international actors have helped to bring the conflict to the current scenario. The European Parliament Friendship Group to promote conflict resolution in Basque Country has been highly significant, as well as the Gernika Network of elected representatives in favor of Basque Right to Self-determination. Diverse foundations have given also assistance. All those efforts have been highly significant. And we are sure will continue to be crucial.

Several friendly parties have also helped the Abertzale Left during those years to develop the necessary internal work to make possible its own new strategy. We want to thanks the efforts of friendly parties like the Sinn Fein, N-VA, the FMLN, SACP or ANC among others. The assistance of senior party members has been very important. People like SF President Gerry Adams or Martin McGuiness have been always ready to assist the Basque process and their involvement had huge impact. Numerous senior members of those parties have come to our country or have welcomed us in theirs. It would be impossible to name all of them but we want to thank to all the efforts made. The solidarity shown by Spanish State left and progressive parties and individuals as well as other stateless nation’s ones has been tremendous. The Basque diaspora has been also involved on these efforts and we are sure it will be more and more involved in the future.

We are sure all of them will continue to assist the Basque people to achieve a just and lasting peace where our right to self-determination will be recognized.

Mila esker.

In solidarity forever.

Abertzale Left.
