we petition the obama administration to:

support an international investigation into war crimes and other human rights abuses committed in Sri Lanka

Both the Sri Lankan government and the opposition Tamil Tigers reportedly committed war crimes, crimes against humanity and human rights abuses during the war in Sri Lanka. The Sri Lankan government has a poor record of effectively investigating violations by its forces, as documented by Amnesty International. An international investigation into the crimes and abuses committed by both sides during the war is needed if the victims are to receive justice. The U.S. government should publicly support such an international investigation as a first step toward achieving accountability in Sri Lanka for these crimes and abuses.

Learn about Petition Thresholds

The initial threshold for a petition to be reviewed by the White House and for an official response to be issued is 5,000 signatures in 30 days. That means it’s up to you to build support for petitions you care about and gather more signatures. In addition, a petition must get 150 signatures in order to be publicly searchable on WhiteHouse.gov.

Over time, we may need to adjust the petition signature thresholds, but we’ll always let you know what the thresholds are.

Signatures needed by October 29, 2011 to reach goal of 5,00
