Hon. Stephen Harper,

    Prime Minister of Canada,

    Office of the Prime Minister

    80 Wellington Street

    Ottawa, ON K1A 0A2

    Dear Sir,

    Re: -Tamil Canadian Elders for Human Rights request the Canadian Government to recall the Canadian Ambassador from Sri Lanka and Suspend Sri Lanka from Commonwealth.

    It’s the time for the Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Foreign Minister John Baird to back up their firm actions against Sri Lankan war crimes and the crimes against world humanity. If Sri Lanka does continue to do nothing and continue to condemn Canadian values, Canadian government has to recall the Canadian Ambassador from Sri Lanka.

    It’s not the first time Sri Lankan government disrespect Canada;

    1) On May 27, 2009 hundreds of Sri Lankan Sinhalese thugs with the support of security personals vandalized the Canadian High Commission in Colombo, accusing Canada of supporting Tamils. Canada expressed concern about the inadequate response by the Sri Lankan police to protect High Commission staff and the premises and registered an official complaint with the government of Sri Lanka.

    2) Upon arrival at Katunayake International airport on June 10, 2009, Liberal foreign affairs critic, Mr. Bob Rae, who did 30 years of public service at home and abroad, was detained for 12 hours at the airport, accused of being a national security threat by the government of Sri Lanka, and refused entry into Sri Lanka. It was a disgrace for the Canadian people.

    3) On Oct, 2009, Conservative Members of Parliament Paul Calandra and Patrick Brown were denied Visas to Sri Lanka. Patrick Brown raises concern about Sri Lankan authorities.

    Canada should lead the Commonwealth Nations to suspend Sri Lanka from the Commonwealth until it agrees for a war crimes tribunal and the recommendations of the UN expert panel committee. The Commonwealth has the history of suspending some nations for less offence other than war crimes.

    We believe our Prime Minister and our Foreign Minister will put full diplomatic weight of Canada behind an effort to adopt International Independent Investigation for the war crimes and a meaningful referendum for the self determination of Tamils in Sri Lanka.

    Thank you.
