COLOMBO (Xinhua) — Sri Lanka was to free another 350 Tamil Tiger rebels who had undergone rehabilitation since the end of the war just over two years ago, an official said Thursday.

Sri Lankan Commissioner General of Rehabilitation, Major General Chandana Rajaguru said that the rebels who had undergone rehabilitation would be set free over the next few days in the north of the country.

He said that with the release of the 350 rehabilitated rebel cadres only another 700 rebels would remain to be set free.

Rajaguru said that among the 700 rebel fighters were some who had been ordered to be detained by local courts.

The Sri Lankan military defeated the Tamil Tiger rebels in May 2009 after 30 years of war and many of those who had been arrested were released over the past several months after they completed rehabilitation.

The Sri Lankan military has however been accused of killing some rebel fighters and leaders who surrendered during the final stages of the conflict.

While the Sri Lankan military has rejected the allegations, a court ruling over the claims by former Sri Lankan army commander Sarath Fonseka is to be made in November.
