Of PM Gillard’s concerns

An LTTE-instigated move to prevent Sri Lanka from hosting the next Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in 2013 has failed. The LTTE was apparently banking on some countries like Canada to achieve its objective but other Commonwealth members knew better than to lend themselves to a terrorist group as a cat’s paw. Australia deserves the credit for thwarting an attempt by the LTTE to file a case against President Mahinda Rajapaksa to humiliate him.

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard is reported to have expressed her government’s concern over the alleged human rights violations during Sri Lanka’s successful war on terror. It defies comprehension why some powerful countries, especially those which militarily backed a mixed bag of violent rebels in a brutal war to oust and kill Libya’s Head of State purportedly to prevent military suppression of political dissent, harp on what is alleged to have happened during Sri Lanka’s war fought by a professional military to end terrorism. They who carried out thousands of air strikes on Libya, even on populous cities like Tripoli and Sirte, regardless of civilian casualties and welcomed the capture and execution of the ousted Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi are making an issue of the last moments of LTTE leaders responsible for killing thousands of civilians and scores of democratic political leaders!

What did those countries that resorted to naked force to save Libyan rebels and mercenaries do when the LTTE trapped over 35,000 Sri Lankan troops in Jaffna in 2000 and threatened to wipe them out? Nothing! The then Kumaratunga government had to shop for weapons frantically to stop the terrorists from marching on that besieged town. But for the big guns that came from Pakistan in record time, a far worse bloodbath than the one NATO claims to have prevented in Benghazi would have happened in Jaffna a decade ago.

In Sri Lanka, people have been liberated from the clutches of terrorism. Democracy has been rekindled in the North and the East, where elections are now held. There are no terror attacks on buses and trains. Children have resumed schooling without fear of being abducted by the LTTE. Child combatants have been freed––a task not even the mighty UN could accomplish for nearly thirty years through negotiations with the LTTE. The country is free from massacres of civilians. (The LTTE carried out about 200 massacres. Among its victims were pregnant mothers, infants and toddlers.) Why is it that the western countries have turned a blind eye to these benefits that have accrued to the people from Sri Lanka’s victory over terrorism?

It is not being argued that everything is hunky dory in the post-LTTE North and East. There are still some problems that need to be solved. But, the situation in that part of the country certainly is a thousand times better than it used to be under the LTTE. Only the dyed-in-the-wool terror backers who did not utter a whimper of protest against the LTTE’s savage acts of terror, or rather, endorsed them, will seek to deny this fact.

Prabhakaran’s crimes which plagued Sri Lanka for nearly thirty years included civilian massacres, bombing of civilian targets, child conscription, extortion, gun running, narcotics trade, money laundering, violent suppression of dissent, assassinations of a President (Ranasinghe Premadasa) a Foreign Minister (Lakshman Kadirgamar), an Opposition Leader (Gamini Dissanayake) and Tamil political leaders like A. Amirthalingam and Neelan Tiruchelvam and an attempt on the life of a President (Chandrika Kumaratunga). But, NATO members and other knights in shining armour never so much as issued a dire warning to Prabhakaran. Instead, some of them banned the LTTE but let it raise funds and carry out other illegal activities on their soil to enable Prabhakaran to unleash mindless terror in Sri Lanka. Today, those countries have launched a diplomatic offensive against the Sri Lankan leaders at the behest of LTTE activists overseas!

The latest State Department country report on Sri Lanka says the LTTE continues to raise funds in spite of its military defeat in 2009. What has the US, which imposed an illegal financial blockade on WikiLeaks, done to prevent a terrorist outfit banned by the State Department from continuing its operations? Another question that arises from the State Department findings is what the LTTE is using those funds for. There is no terrorist war to fund and therefore the LTTE is obviously spending all its money on lobbying against Sri Lanka in retaliation for the decimation of its military leadership. It claims to control block votes in some parts of the developed world. So, it is not surprising that many a western politician abuses his or her position to advance the LTTE’s cause politically and diplomatically.
