Subject: ACT NOW NEWS 62: Tell Liam Fox to support an INDEPENDENT investigation!

To: info.actnow@googlemail.com

Dear Friend,

Time to tell Liam Fox MP we want an INDEPENDENT Investigation!

Despite the mounting evidence that at least 40,000 innocent civilians had been killed in the latter part of the conflict in Sri Lanka in 2009, and the growing international demands for an independent investigation, there are still some who would trust the Sri Lankan Government to organise a proper investigation. Common sense would surely dictate that no Government will want atrocities exposed if they or their supporters are responsible?!

Sri Lanka’s response to these calls was to set up a Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC), yet it doesn’t have a remit to look into any atrocities and a UN Advisory Panel report specifically condemns the LLRC as failing "to satisfy key international standards of independence and impartiality".

The Defence Secretary, Liam Fox is one of those few who would give Sri Lanka the benefit of the doubt and continues to call upon that Government to investigate it themselves. His own Prime Minister and Foreign Office support an independent investigation but not it seems, Dr. Fox!

Stop backing Sri Lanka

Act Now will now take this message to Dr. Fox MP’s own constituency (North Somerset) but we need your help!

All come down to Nailsea!

We are calling upon all our activists to make their way down to one of the constituency’s towns, Nailsea, on Saturday 10th September. Starting at 12 noon we will be running a petition stall asking Liam Fox to stop backing Sri Lanka and to support an independent investigation. We also hope to ‘mass-leaflet’ the area with your help. Meet in the High Street (town square) at noon!

Don’t forget the e-mail to Conservative Central Office too!

Please send this message below and send to chairman@conservatives.com

Dear Sir/Madam,

Following the showing of the Channel 4 television documentary accusing Sri Lanka’s military of mass killings of civilians in the final months of the island’s war in early 2009, the British Prime Minister agreed that there needs to be an ‘Independent Investigation’ of what happened. British Foreign Office Minister Alistair Burt has also commented that "The UK Government expects to see progress by the end of the year. If the Sri Lankan government does not respond we will support the international community in revisiting all options available to press the Sri Lankan Government to fulfil its obligations."

Unfortunately other important members of the Conservative Party are supporting the Sri Lankan regime, especially the MEP for Eastern England Geoffrey Orden and the Defence Minister, Dr Liam Fox.

Very recently the Defence Secretary visited Sri Lanka, met with President Mahinda Rajapakasa and delivered a lecture. This visit, given the credible allegations of Government war crimes by a UN Panel of Experts and by Channel 4, risks sending mixed messages. On the one hand, despite the UK government’s repeated calls for impartial investigations, Dr Fox professes support for the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission’ (LLRC) appointed by the Sri Lanka government, despite the UN Panel’s report criticizing the body as "deeply flawed.” By now it should already be clear to anyone that, after more than two years, the Sri Lankan government has comprehensively failed to produce an independent and transparent investigation into allegations of war crimes, and evidence of summary executions by government forces has never been properly investigated.

I implore you to ask Dr Fox, Geoffrey Orden and any others of your party to desist from giving Sri Lankan Government succour and instead to get behind our PM’s call for an ‘Independent Investigation’.

Yours sincerely,

<Your name>

AN Director Graham Williamson recently spoke at a book launch of Peopling of Sri Lanka – An outline based on Genetic (DNA) Studies. This highlighted that Sinhalese and Tamils largely share the same DNA. Graham pointed out that this revelation “debunks the lie propagated by Buddhist extremists that Tamils are an ‘immigrant and alien (to Sinhalese) race’ with no indigenous rights. Sharing a similar gene-pool, actually the two peoples should be able to separate in peace rather than in anger’”. Copies of the book can be obtained by contacting the author at svishan@yahoo.co.uk.
