Target: The Commonwealth Games Federation General Assembly

The Government of Sri Lanka has consistently refused to acknowledge the grievances of minorities and has acted with impunity to block every attempt to establish an independent and credible investigation into allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity.

On November 11th 2011 the Commonwealth Games Federation General Assembly will meet to decide whether the Sri Lankan City of Hambantota or the Australian Gold Coast will host the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Please sign our petition and support our cause for Sri Lanka not to be awarded the prestigious Commonwealth Games while allegations of war crimes and the concerns of minorities go unheeded.

We, the undersigned, call on the Commonwealth Games Federation General Assembly to recognise that it would be inappropriate to award Sri Lanka the right to host the 2018 Commonwealth Games, until such a time as when the findings of the United Nations Panel of Experts on Sri Lanka have been independently and credibly investigated and the Panel’s recommendations, which would put Sri Lanka on the course of justice, dignity and peace, are fully implemented.

Sri Lanka does not deserve the privilege of hosting the Commonwealth Games. A clear message needs to be sent by the global community that they need to be held accountable for the Human Rights Violations against Tamils.

Justice is if fair play and sporting events do not support the regime of terror. Like the Olympics of 1936 in Berlin, which should never have taken place in a suppressive country, one can learn from history

Common wealth should not tarnish its reputation by associating itself with war criminals. Also how can Sri lanka a country dependent on aid be able to fund the games? This is an attempt by the ruling family to waste money that could be used to improve the lives of ordinary citizens.

Staging Comonwealth games in Sri Lanka is to ignore the Tamils against whom UN allegations of war crimes is pending. Any step to discount it, is to condone the violations of stated principles of the Comminwealth

Allowing Commonwealth Games to be staged in Sri Lanka would be tantamount to rewarding war crimes. I urge the Commonwealth Games Federation General Assembly not to reward a country that refuses to international requests to allow independent inquiries into the allegations.
