Join the Tamil Canadian Campaign to raise awareness and fundraise for Amnesty

On September 18, 2011, Tamil Canadians and friends will be participating in a community walk-a-thon in support of Amnesty International, a worldwide movement of people dedicated to the protection and promotion of human rights.
The 5-kilometer walk will start at 9 a.m. in Thomson Memorial Park, Scarborough. All proceeds from the walk-a-thon will go directly to Amnesty International. The Canadian Tamil Congress, a non-profit organization, is coordinating community efforts for this campaign.

It’s easy to participate, here’s how:
1. Sign up now and a personal page will be created for you.
2. Customize your personal page by logging in and uploading your own photo and adding a personalized message.
3. Upload your personal email addressbook onto your Email Centre and send ‘Sponsor Me’ messages to everyone you know.

Why are Tamil Canadians walking for human rights?
As Canadians, we share a deep respect for democracy, rule of law, fundamental rights and freedoms, and human rights. These are values that continue to be under fire in many parts of the world.
By participating in this walk, Tamil Canadians and supporters are helping Amnesty International to expose the truth about human rights violations, speak out and create change so as to ensure that each person enjoys all of the human rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This September, help us celebrate Amnesty’s 50th Birthday. Walk with us in support of human rights.

50 Years of Human Rights Work – Join in at www.AI50.ca
50 years ago, something amazing happened when Peter Benenson, a British lawyer, wrote an article calling for the release of two Portuguese students imprisoned for drinking a toast to freedom. Because one person spoke out and turned his disgust into action for change, Amnesty International—a worldwide movement of more than three million members—was born. Amnesty members have helped release tens of thousands of people who had been imprisoned for their beliefs or their way of life. They have ended the death penalty in dozens of countries and helped bring human rights abusers to account. Amnesty members have changed laws and lives.
You and the people you have inspired to join our movement will join with activists around the world to take actions on our anniversary campaigns. From increasing maternal health, to abolishing the death penalty and instituting corporate accountability, these will be actions on which concerted global action – human rights ‘people power’ – can really make a difference. And even more importantly, they will be human rights campaigns that WE CAN WIN!
Once you have completed your walk, please join in at www.AI50.ca and invite everyone you know to do the same.
