Sri Lanka holds panel discussion at UNHRC on the Humanitarian Operation

Tue, Sep 13, 2011, 12:15 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Sept 12, Geneva: Sri Lanka’s delegation to the 18th Session of Human Rights Council held an informal panel discussion on the government’s humanitarian operation concluded in May 2009 liberating the country from the three-decades long terrorism.

Sri Lankan delegation led by Special Human Rights Envoy, Plantation Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe presented the government’s detailed report on the war "Humanitarian Operation – Factual Analysis"

The delegation also screened the documentary "Lies Agreed Upon" produced by the government to counteract the allegations and reveal the discrepancies in the documentary aired by the Britain’s Channel 4 television that showed unauthenticated and unverified footage of alleged war crimes.

Addressing the panel the Minister said Sri Lanka has won the war against terrorism and now the focus is on to win peace.

The President of the Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed, supporting Sri Lanka’s stand said it is time to find a solution amicable to all communities in Sri Lanka.

"We must understand that a number of very, very bad things happened but we must be able to move forward," he said.

"As long as we argue about Sri Lanka, the government is increasingly marginalized and we are losing the government and the country outside the fold of the international community," Nasheed cautioned.

The former Attorney General of Sri Lanka, Mohan Peiris, and the Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the UN in Geneva Ms. Tamara Kunanayakam also addressed the panel discussion.

Ministers Nimal Siripala De Silva, Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, Parliamentarian Sajin De Vas Gunawardane, foreign delegations, and LTTE supporters were also present.
