Honouring 75 years of Volunteerism in Sri Lanka SLRCS Director General Mr Tissa Abeywickrema and Vice President 1 Mr Bharatha Jonikkuhewa at the media briefing

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society (SLRCS). A media briefing was held in Colombo yesterday (2nd August) to highlight the SLRCS’ past achievements as well as its future programmes.

The briefing was held under the patronage of Director General of the SLRCS Mr. Tissa Abeywickrama and Vice President (1) of the SLRCS Mr. Bharatha Jonikkuhewa.

” ..Volunteers are the backbone of this Organization. In the past 75 years of existence of the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society, volunteers have been the corner stone of our aid to the people…” Director General of the SLRCS said during the media briefing.

Over 20 journalists from print and electronic media institutions including the state media attended the briefing.

Speaking at the briefing Vice President (1) of the SLRCS Mr. Bharatha Jonikkuhewa said that the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society has contributed much to the country though not all of it has been publicised.

Subsequent to the media briefing, a book titled “The Volunteer Inside Me” comprising of volunteer stories from all the SLRCS branches was launched.

The first copy was presented to the Coordinating Secretary (Parliamentary Affairs) to His Excellency the President of Sri Lanka Mr. Kumarasiri Hettige by the Chairman of the SLRCS Mr. Jagath Abeysinghe.

Speaking at the event Mr. Kumarasiri Hettige said that the SLRCS is a strength to Sri Lanka and the volunteers of this organisation should be recognised well.

IFRC Head of Delegation Bob Mckerrow, ICRC Deputy Head of Delegation, Finn Ruda, IFRC Programme Coordinator Keti Khurtsia and representatives from Partner National Societies and many other dignitaries attended the event as well.
