Repatriating Tamil Tigers: A tacit pact with Sri Lanka?

Penang Deputy Chief Minister II P Ramasamy believes there is some kind of a cooperation between Sri Lanka and Malaysia in deporting former Tamil Tigers detained here.

PETALING JAYA: Penang Deputy Chief Minister II P Ramasamy has accused Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein of having a “tacit” pact with Sri Lanka in repatriating Tamil Sri Lankans detained here under the Internal Security Act (ISA) to their country of origin.

“The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) is dead and gone after its final defeat in May 2009. Why the Malaysian government wants to arrest, detain and deport members of this former outfit remains unclear.

“Maybe there is tacit cooperation between the Malaysian government and its counterpart in Sri Lanka. However, such cooperation has never been made clear,” Ramasamy said in a press statement.

Ramasamy was commenting on Hishammuddin’s decision to repartriate Sri Lankan ISA detainee Thirugnanasampandar Manivanan, 37, who is alleged to have links with the LTTE, and Agus Salim, 34, an Indonesian allegedly linked to Jemaah Islamiyah.

Ramasamy was concerned over the security of those released and repartriated to Sri Lanka.

“We fear that many innocent Tamils who escaped the war have been arrested in the past on the basis of information provided by the Sri Lankan embassy in Kula Lumpur and subsequently deported to Sri Lanka.

“The well-known case was that of KP Pathmanathan, a one-time arms procurement chief of the LTTE.

“However, Hishammuddin seems to be unaware of the dangers that these Tamils face when they are deported home.

“Since the Sri Lankan government considers all able-bodied Tamils as supporters of the defunct LTTE, chances are high that they would be detained, tortured and killed in Sri Lankan camps,” Ramasamy said.

He also criticised the continued use of the controversial ISA despite repeated calls to scrap the draconian law.

“Malaysia has more than adequate laws to deal with any foreign or local threats to the security of the country.

“Why such a draconian law is invoked is not clear. Maybe the home ministry wants to conceal certain matters from the eyes of the public,” Ramasamy said.

Brownie points

Ramasamy, who is also DAP’s deputy secretary-general, also questioned the detention of eight Immigration officers for human trafficking, of whom three were released on Tuesday.

Hishammuddin announced that the eight would be released in batches on grounds of good behaviour.

Ramasamy queried why the eight were not charged in court with human trafficking and instead been detained under the ISA.

“Even if the eight immigration officers had engaged in human trafficking, they should have been charged in court. Why they were detained under the ISA remains a mystery,” he said.

He also criticised the home ministry for taking the issue of human trafficking lightly.

“Human trafficking is serious, but the ministry seems not to have taken this matter seriously. Laws of the country are simply set aside at the whims and fancies of the ministry and the police,” he added.

Ramasamy believed that the government released the eight to gain brownie points in the month of Ramadan.

Perak DAP vice-chairman A Sivanesan also had called for the Immigration officers to be charged in court with human trafficking offences.

Malaysia should mind its own business………They should follow the Asean policy of non interference. When they dont interfere with affairs of other ASEAN countries such as BURMA, THAILAND etc….then why should they interfere with some country in South Asia. This will reflect badly on Malaysia when the person deported is tortured and killed in a Sri Lankan camp. The whole world is watching and condemning the barbaric acts of Sri Lanka and Malaysia goes and deports that individual. Hishammuddin needs a quick lesson on current and world affairs before he embarasses Malaysia again.

For Malaysia is a simple case of a alleged subersive from another country. Msia would have deported him, regardless if it is britain, us, india, bangladesh and in this case sri lanka. so nothing can be done in that sense, it is as per Msia standard practise and treaties with the countries concerned. but i upset Ramasamy bring this issue of one person ‘s deport. what about the buthering of thousands daily in sri lanka by the sinhala government,. It is nothing short of a genocide, Why does not the prof make haste and provides solidarity with the suffering tamils..we are missing the bigger war

Much government money and time have been spent in Sri Lanka to rehabilitate and turn around the lives of its countries children, kidnapped and forced into war. Many key LTTE people have now made their way back into society in that country. Very likely that these two will be questioned, and if they have caused the death of countless innocents they will be dealt with according to the law. Those who played minor roles return to society. See the Sri Lankan perspective, shared by Tamils, Muslims, Burghers and Sinhalese of that country, not the LTTE terrorist perspective. They are twisted, inhumane and worthy of just punishment. No special treatment deserved.

Ramasamy, thank you for questioning, if you think the Home Minister is doing wrong. If it is wrong what the Home Minister is doing, you must interfere for the voiceless people who are arrested with no access to lawyers. The Home Minister should watch the Killing Fields in Sri Lanka before deporting Tamils to Sri Lanka.

LTTE cadres are wrongly called Tamil tigers. They are mere pussy cats. They had not and they will not harm even an ant. So how on earth they could have killed VIPs like Rajive Gandhi, Ranasinha Premadasa, Luxman Kthirgamar, Appapilliai Amirthaligam and tens of thousands of other civilians they are being accused of. LTTE cadres had never associated with human smuggling, banditory, drug dealing, arms procurring, suicide bombing and such nasty acts. They have been meditating in temples, kovils, churches and mosques all the time. Whenever you see them or meet them, treat them with respect. Thank you, Leela.

We could still remember how our M’sian government treated the Palastanian – with red carpet – full of concern. But as for the Sri lankan Tamils, our Hissam, wants to get rid of them eventhough there is a great danger of them being torchured and possibally killed by the Sri Lankan army. Pl. don’t practise double standard lah Hissam.
