Malaysian parliamentarians who visited Sri Lanka recently say no efforts have been made at reconciliation or improving the living standard of the minority Tamils.

INTERVIEW

KUALA LUMPUR: It has been two years since the civil war ended in Sri Lanka but there has been little effort made in reconciliation and helping the Tamil minority who were the main victims of the conflict.

Teluk Intan MP M Manogaran, Sungai Petani MP Johari Abdul, Selangor Senator S Ramakrishnan and two NGO members made a five day field trip to the island last month and their conclusion is that nothing much has been done to help the victims of the war.

They visited Colombo, Puttalam, Vavuniya, the north and northeast region of Sri Lanka.

“We expected to see some semblance of normalcy but there was none,” Manogaran said when relating his experience in Sri Lanka to FMT .

“Access to the many areas in the northern region which was formerly held by Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) is controlled by the military.

“Every civil action must receive military approval. Application has to be made via general agent,” said Manogaran .

A general agent is like a district officer.

“Every 50 metres I saw the Sri Lankan Army (SLA) armed with sub machine guns. They are some times accompanied by the military police.”

Manogaran who met minority Muslims in the Puttalam district said there are no school facilities for children in the internally displaced persons (IDP) camps.

He and the rest of the group also visited Vavuniya that has the largest number of IDP camps.

“They don’t even have a proper house. It is either a mud house with zinc roofs or huts with attap roofs.

Wanting freedom

Recalling the conversations that he had with the people he met there, he said: “I was shocked to hear that they did not want money.

“They wanted freedom from the military administration because they did not feel safe.

This, he claimed, is because of the rampant sexual exploitation on the women by the military.

“There are five to six abortions daily in Jaffna Hospital,” Manogaran claimed.

“One woman, whom I met, even claimed that she was willing to sleep with the military men if they could guarantee the safety of her family, he added.

The rampant rape of the woman is made worse as there are very few males left.

“The men either died in war, left the  country or are in detention,” Manogaran said.

Manogaran said his sources in Sri Lanka believed that there are about 9,000 men unaccounted for. They are believed to be detained by the Sri Lankan army.

He also told FMT that the Sri Lanka government is ‘Sinhalanising’ Sri Lanka by relocating Sinhala people into Tamil majority areas in the northern region.

“They even build Buddhist temples in areas where they are no Sinhalas,” said Manogaran.

Memo to the UN

During the five day trip, Manogaran also met with minority lawmakers from the government and opposition parliamentarians.

“They told me that they are unable to do anything. If they were to raise this issue they are branded as anti-national and anti-Sri Lanka.”

As for the NGOs, he added, they have to be registered under the Defence Ministry.

Sri Lanka had an internal conflict involving the SLA and the LTTE for over two decades before it ended in May 2009 with the death of LTTE chief, V Prabakaran.

The findings that  he and the rest of the delegation saw, led the Pakatan lawmakers to send a protest memorandum to the Sri Lankan envoy Dr DD Ranasinghe last Friday (photo).

Channel 4 journalist, an LTTEer *Underwent training in Vanni *Served in LTTE military wing *Joined Voice of Tigers . Issipriya the woman who is alleged to have been a journalist and a news presenter in the Channel 4 documentary, was an LTTE cadre. Issipriya was born in 1982 in Jaffna and was subsequently recruited by the LTTE and underwent military training in the Vanni.
She then served in the LTTE Military Wing and subsequently joined the Voice of Tigers (VoT), the official radio station of the LTTE.
A report submitted to UNESCO by the government following the bombing of VoT by the Sri Lanka Air Force in 2007 made it clear that VoT was the official propaganda radio station of the LTTE.
Issipriya was given the rank of ‘Lt Col’ due to her contribution to the LTTE. She married Sea Tiger cadre Sri Ram who also died in the final battle in May 2009. Sri Ram was the former LTTE Senior Sea Tiger leader in Trincomalee and took part in most of the operations launched by the LTTE against the Sri Lanka Navy and Merchant Vessels.
The identity card issued by the LTTE to Issipriya, in which she was clad in combat attire, further confirms her military involvements with the LTTE, the Defence Ministry said.

The problem with Sri Lanka is both parties do not have the give-and-take policy. Do you want to fight for freedom or stay together and build a good future for the children. What is the point of freedom if you can’t feed your child or women being abused? Why not just accept the Sinhalese government and have a good cooperation with them? What are u fighting for? The more you fight the more will die? End of the day, u will have no Tamils in Sri Lanka. Put down your ego, fighting spirits and emotions and bring up your education, harmony and economy. If not graveyard is the answer and Sri Lanka will be gone forever. I don’t understand why the people are being too emotional on freedom. To me building a good future for the new generation is more important rather than fighting for something that is not going to no where.

FOLLOW THE MALAYSIAN OR SINGAPOREAN WAY AND YOUR FUTURE IS SECURED. WHO CARES ABOUT SKIN COLOR, RELIGION, MINORITY OR MAJAORITY. I THINK THE TAMILS ARE KILLING THEMSELVES BY FIGHTING FOR FREEDOM. WHO CARES IF YOU ARE A MINORITY AS LONG AS YOU ARE A CITIZEN OF SRI LANKA. BY FIGHTING, YOU ARE JUST KILLING THE INNOCENT KIDS. THE TAMIL MILITARY ARE MAKING USE OF THE INNOCENT TAMILS. NO POINT BLAMING THE GOVT. I AM NOT HERE TO JUSTIFY BUT AM SADDENED TO SEE SO MANY KILLINGS ESPECIALLY ON THE CHILDREN. WHO TO BE BLAMED FOR THIS?

Compare the status of Tamils in Sri Lanka and Malaysia. In Sri Lanka 15% Tamil population have Tamil as an official language. Their children are educated in Tamil. They hold more than their fare share of government jobs. It used to be around 60% at the time of independence which inevitably had to change subsequently. This demand for a separate state stems from the ‘grievence’ that they lost their priviledged position. For them 15% of Tamils holding 25% of government jobs is ‘discrimination’. Colombo’s population is 40% Tamil now. But they complaign about Sinhalese returning to their land from which they were chased out by the LTTE. Compare the situation of Tamils in Malaysia and Sri Lanka. Tamil chauvanism is the main reason for this state of affairs in Sri Lanka

I fully agree with George Fernandez. This article seems to be another LTTE propaganda. If sinhala language made mandatory for everyone in SL like malay in Malaysia, tamil people will have first hand experience of the heart of sinhalease people, however the tamil nationalists will not be happy at all who created this problem among tamil speaking people.

All this will lead to more miseries in the future. All those IDP children growing up in the camps have watched many attrocities commited by the SLA against their fellow tamils. This is a begining for another insurgency if the grievances of North Eastern people are not addressed by the Sri Lankan government. There is no point comparing Sri Lanka with Malaysia or any other country. Point of the matter is the goverment of Sri Lanka must fulfill at least some of the aspirations of Tamils before its too late. I think another 30 years of war is just not worth it!!!!!

Sri Lankan Tamils truly deserve discrimination for all the atrocities they committed during the nearly 30 years rebel war to their own kind and the Sinhala population. It is a fact that Tamils live peacefully all over Sri Lanka. Just imagine, once nearly 12% of the population, Tamils in Sri Lanka have equal status and Tamil language is an official working medium in the country and the National anthem is also sung in Tamil. So, what the heck are they looking for? To partition the country? Wild dreams for sure and it will never happen. Now the Tamil population is dwindled to nearly 5% due to exodus en masse looking for greener pastures abroad, talking about equality is not an issue Sri Lankans are worried about.

Claiming that sexual harrasement, rape seems to be a Malaysian thing to slander Sri Lankan Soldiers, and this seems to be a typical Malaysian way of manipulating to win an argument, wonder what type of Tamil MP was sent by the Malaysian to observe the IDPs in Sri Lanka and give a negative comment like that, when the Government and private sectors of Malaysia have been giving positive comments. It is the lies that is ruining the Tamils peoples future, and honesty must be incalculated in their minds. Frankly this war against Tamil ltte was won on HONESTY. It was the Sri Lankan who wanted to see the end of terrorism, and the Government of Sri Lanka carried out a Human rescue mission to end terrorism. Today it is a much better and safer place to travel, and many Tamils are returning back. If it is bad no one will return.Get the facts straight. Crediblity of MP making unwarranted comments is unnecessary.

Thank you Mr Pragalath for highlighting the continuing atrocities committed by the Sri Lankan soldiers to the tormented people who have undergone untold hardship and trauma. The world community have a moral duty to persuade SRi Lankan leaders to be human and understanding towards the children and their mothers who have lost their bread winners. It may be that there is only one way of achieving this, that is, by appealing to UN members to agree to appoint a committee to independently investigate the allegations made in the UN Panel Report.

If Sri Lank allow a free access to all journalists and foreigners to Tamil speaking areas the true picture can emerge. Now the world has to choose between what is said by the government on one hand and the main Tamil Party / some foreign media like Free Malaysia Today on the other. Why does the government bar independent journalists from visiting these areas that are under military rule?

It is a disgrace to the Sri Lankan government to allow this war to carry on for 30 years, instead of sorting out the grievances. Look the Tamil females were stripped naked and Tamil men naked and shot in the head shown in the killing fields documentary. It appears some of the Sri Lankan army are sick, insane animals. This is how the Sinhala government were treating the Tamils with their racist policies.

I dont think the demographics of Sri Lanka is correct. The Sri Lankan population after 1981 census are based on estimations given that large areas of northern Sri Lanka were under LTTE control. Agreed some of the population fled the war, Sri Lankan Tamil percentage is grossly understated. The Sri Lankan government estimates that the Tamils (Sri Lankan and Indian) account for 18-21% of the population. I agree another war by the tamils or sinhalese will be devastating for all communities in Sri Lanka. Reconciliation is the only way forward for all parties. Like I said earlier Sri Lanka must fulfill at least some of the aspirations of Tamils( and other communities) before its too late.

Tamils migrated to Sri Lanka just like they migrated to Malaysia. There is no difference. Tamil Nadu is the homeland of the Tamils from where they went everywhere else. In Sri Lanka all signboards include the Tamil language. Tamils can study in Tamil medium right up to and including university, Tamil is used in the courts of law and spoken in parliament. All coins, notes have Tamil on them. There is a national Tamil language day. Does anything like this exist for Tamils in Malaysia? Does anything like this exist for the Chinese in Malaysia?

Tamils are living in camps because the LTTE (which many Tamils supported) waged a war against the government. Do you think war is a walk in the park? Did the Tamils expect to get a separate state on a platter? The president of Sri Lanka was the first person to speak in Tamil at the United Nations – not even a Tamil himself has done that.

Thanks George. Few people outside of Sri Lanka realize what really goes on here, and those that scream bloodly murder have the least idea about the situation of Tamils in Sri Lanka. The idea of Elam, 7% percent of the countries trying to take 1/3 of the country and 2/3 of the coast line, because they couldn’t get along with the rest of the country is really outlandish. When you think that even a smaller fraction of the Tamils of Sri Lanka were really interested in that, as they live much better lives elsewhere in Sri Lanka, why would they want to to go up north. If Elam had been realized who would have ended up there? Probably the majority would not have been Sri Lankans. Elam was a pipe dream that caused millions of people nightmares. Enough of this all. Tamils and Sinhalese are all from India migrated to Sri Lanka, so both sides are entitled to equal rights and opportunities and not one becomes dorminant. Racial discrimination caused this war. Still the Sinhala government has not learnt lessons continuing to allow the army to abuse and rape Tamil women and Tamil people are kept in terrible conditions despite, they all are citizens of Sri Lanka. Don’t you think this is a disgrace to the world especially it is a Buddhist country.

The language legislation is not implemented though it was passed in 1987, the ministers in charge of implementation Vasutheva Nanayakare and DEW Gunesekarare said so. Only less that 4% of the jobs are done by Tamils. Almost 100% of the army, navy, air force and police are comprised of Sinhalese. The Sinhalese are sponsored by the government to settle in Tamil speaking areas. How else can you explain that in 1947 Tamils elected 21.5% of the MPs and now only only 10%?

NO POINT BLAMING THE GOVT. I AM NOT HERE TO JUSTIFY BUT AM SADDENED TO SEE SO MANY KILLINGS ESPECIALLY ON THE CHILDREN. WHO TO BE BLAMED FOR THIS?

Sharma, look what is happening in Sri Lanka. Tamil women are raped and abused even after the war so how do you expect to have peace. In Singapore or Malaysia women are not raped by the army .

      Dear Nims…

Channel 4 said Issiapriya is a Ltte member..They in fact mentioned she belonged to Ltte propganda department..

Problem is it has been proved by forensic pathologist that Issaipriya was SEXUALLY ASSAULTED..

Srilankan army famous for their RAPES IN HAITI during peace keeping mission, lacks any credibility, only an international investigation will reveal who did what..

Where are those UN jokers that need to be enlightened on this issue? They seem to quietly running away from this particular issue, a reason why UN in the didn’t allow this controversial documentary to be screened at the Dag Mahhersial theatre in the UN headquarters in New York.
