Ranil supports government to get rid of “traitor” label

Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe is currently engaged in a strategy to overcome the “traitor” label given to him by extending his support to the government, sources from Sirikotha said.
Wickremesinghe addressing the V.A. Sugathadasa memorial lecture said that the party is of the view that the government and the opposition has to work together to overcome foreign interventions and that his party would fully support the government in finding a political solution to the ethnic issue.

Wickremesinghe also said that his party would participate in the parliamentary select committee to find a political solution to the ethnic issue.
A senior UNP parliamentarian who spoke to us said that the strategic move by the Opposition Leader would help remove the “traitor” label from the party.
He said that the pressure from the international community on the Rajapaksa administration would not cease due to the UNP’s decision to support the government and that making such a strategic move would help the party win the support of the Buddhist clergy and the Sinhala Buddhist population in the country.
Meanwhile, a JVP leader told us that Ranil Wickremesinghe’s US trip was sponsored by the government and that he had therefore worked according to the government’s agenda during his visit.
