    President Rajapaksa to participate in the 15th International Economic Forum in Saint Petersburg

        Colombo, 15 June, (Asiantribune.com):

        Sri Lanka President will join very important Heads of states especially from the Eastern Europe, Spain, Finland and China and for the first time participate in an Economic Forum Discussion from June 16 to 18.

        Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa will be leaving to Russia on a 3-day official visit to participate in the 15th International Economic Forum in Saint Petersburg.

        Over the years, the International Economic Forum has grown into a leading world discussion forum bringing together prominent politicians, corporate executives and experts to deliberate on key issues of the global economy.

        Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa will be joining Dmitry Medvedev – Russian President, Hu Jintao – President of the People’s Republic of China, Jose Lius Rodriguezzapa tero – Prime Minister of Spain, Tarja Halonen – President of Finland, and Nursultan Nazarbayew – President of Republic of Kazak, who are some of the confirmed leading participants in the economic discussion forum.

        According to Udayanga Weeratunga, Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Russian Federation, President Rajapaksa is expected to hold bilateral talks on the sideline of the economic discussion Forum.

        Ambassador Weeratunga speaking to Asian Tribune said President Rajapaksa will be having bilateral talks with Dmitry Medvedev – Russian President, Hu Jintao – President of the People’s Republic of China and also with other leaders who are participating in the economic discussion forum.

        He added that Sri Lanka’s President will be accompanied by Prof. G.L. Peris, External Affairs Minister, Minister (Dr) Sarath Amunugama, Nivard Cabral , Governor of the Central Bank, Lalith Weeratunga, Secretary to the President, Sajin de Vass Gunawardene MP, Bandula Jayasekera, Director of the President Media and Ms. Hemali Arunatilake, Acting Director General West in the Ministry of External Affairs.

        Ambassador Weratunga while speaking to Asian Tribune said for the first time when Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa visited Russia he was awarded a Honoris Causa Doctorate by the Peoples’ Friendship University (PFU), formally known as Patricia Lumumba University of Moscow in Russia on 6th February 2010.

        The Peoples’ Friendship University was celebrating its Golden Jubilee and to mark the anniversary it has been decided to award the Honorary Doctorate to President Rajapaksa for his contribution for world peace and for outstanding success against defeating terrorism.

        It is to be noted that the Lanka – Russian friendship and bilateral relationships are presently at its best.

        Ambassador Weeratunga speaking to Asian Tribune further said that Russia is the leading importer of Sri Lankan Tea and also arrangements are made for easy air connectivity between Russia and Sri Lanka.

        He added that at present we are promoting tourism and mainly tourists from Russia to Colombo.

        Ambassador Weeratunga said that from 15th September, SriLankan national carrier will commence flying from Colombo to Moscow. There will be two flights per week, every Thursdays and Saturdays. SriLankan will take off from Colombo to Moscow on Thursday evening and from Moscow to Colombo on Saturday evening.

        In the beginning he said, for two months SriLankan flights will fly via Dubai and from October will operate direct flights from Colombo to Moscow. The direct flight will take 8.15 flying hours.

        In the beginning the SriLankan flights will fly via Dubai and will fly A 320, which needs a stopover halve way. In October, SriLankan is planning to fly directly the Airbus 330 /340.

        Sri Lankan Ambassador further said that Russian national carrier Aeroflot will start flying Boeing 777 to Colombo from 27 October. Aeroflot will also fly regularly two flights a week to Colombo.

        The Ambassador also said that last year Sri Lankan President was in Ukraine and during that visit it was agreed with Viktor Fedorovych Yanukovych – Ukraine President to fly Ukrainian flights to Colombo on a regular basis. Accordingly the Ambassador said last year from 13 November, Yanukovych arranged to fly Ukraine international Airlines, two regular flights from Kiev per week to Colombo via Abu Dhabi.

        Furthermore Ambassador Weeratunga revealed that Ukranians are also starting to fly another airline called Aerosvit and they are planning commence in October two direct flights a week, regularly from Kiev to Colombo.

        According to available statistics in the past five years, the total Ukrainian tourists to Colombo for a year were only 452, but now it is more than 10,000 tourists, Ambassador said.
