“The government of Sri Lanka have a history of arresting and detaining rejected Sri Lankan asylum seekers upon their return and we are aware of cases of people being tortured”, said Yolanda Foster, Amnesty International’s Sri Lanka researcher.

Torture is one of the most profound human rights abuses, taking a terrible toll on thousands of Tamil individuals and their families in Sri Lanka. Rape, blows to the soles of the feet, suffocation in water, burns, electric shocks, sleep deprivation, shaking and beating are commonly used by torturers to break down every Tamils personality.
