Watch this episode now on 4oD Sri Lanka's Killing Fields

Jon Snow presents a forensic investigation into the final weeks of the quarter-century-long civil war between the government of Sri Lanka and the secessionist rebels, the Tamil Tigers.

With disturbing and distressing descriptions and film of executions, atrocities and the shelling of civilians the programme features devastating new video evidence of war crimes – some of the most horrific footage Channel 4 has ever broadcast.

Captured on mobile phones, both by Tamils under attack and government soldiers as war trophies, the disturbing footage shows: the extra-judicial executions of prisoners; the aftermath of targeted shelling of civilian camps; and dead female Tamil fighters who appear to have been raped or sexually assaulted, abused and murdered.

The film is made and broadcast as UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon faces growing criticism for refusing to launch an investigation into ‘credible allegations’ that Sri Lankan forces committed war crimes during the closing weeks of the bloody conflict with the Tamil Tigers.

In April 2011, Ban Ki-moon published a report by a UN-appointed panel of experts, which concluded that as many as 40,000 people were killed in the final weeks of the war between the Tamil Tigers and government forces.

It called for the creation of an international mechanism to investigate alleged violations of international humanitarian law and international human rights law committed by government forces and the Tamil Tigers during that time.

This film provides powerful evidence that will lend new urgency to the panel’s call for an international inquiry to be mounted, including harrowing interviews with eye-witnesses, new photographic stills, official Sri Lankan army video footage, and satellite imagery.

Also examined in the film are some of the horrific atrocities carried out by the Tamil Tigers, who used civilians as human shields.

Channel 4 News has consistently reported on the bloody denouement of Sri Lanka’s civil war. Sri Lanka’s Killing Fields presents a further damning account of the actions of Sri Lankan forces, in a war that the government still insists was conducted with a policy of Zero Civilian Casualties.

The film raises serious questions about the consequences if the UN fails to act, not only with respect to Sri Lanka but also to future violations of international law.

Between 1933-45 reports of systematic murder of millions of Jews in Europe was reported and unbelieved; consequently 12 million people were murdered. We as a world of civilised human beings owe it to the Srilankan victims to insist on justice and bring these individuals to justice. The Srilankan government and their army officials at the highest levels should be held to account for war crimes against the innocent. If we don’t do this we are as guilty as they are. If we don’t do this we have pulled the triggers and dropped the bombs ourselves. I am disgusted that we have annual memorial services of ‘lest we forget’ and then blatantly sweep these horrendouse crimes under the carpet and bury our heads in the sands in the name of diplomacy. Pressure should be applied in every way to bring the perpetrators (government ministers and high ranking army officials) to justice.

Some people may say this is a biased video, but channel 4 showed the atrocities happened only in the last few days of the war. It was clearly mentioned that the both the SL army and the LTTE committed violence against the innocent civilians, but Sri Lankan government has the responsibility to protect the public regardless their religion or race. The video clip proves that Sri Lankan army is the most indiscipline army in the world. It is very sad to see these kinds of things happening in a country where the majority is followers of Buddha. Both the SL army and the LTTE should stand in the international judicial system. If there is nothing to hide why SL government is not prepare to face the international court?

The least that Sri lankan government and International agencies can do to salvage their sins and alleviate the sufferings of tamil people is to grant them their freedom and their Ealem where the unfulfilled souls who had lost their lives will be reborn as happy children and live in peace in their homeland. Sri lanka should stop its denial mode and realise their mistakes and allow tamil people to live their life in dignity and peace in their homeland. Wish to see srilanka and Ealem Tamil Nation(New tamil country) as good neighbours in the future with mutual respect and trust.

Just had a look at the UN report on the brutalities of the Sri Lankan civil war. I’m quite shocked to see they mention six "potential serious violations" including forced recruitment of children, civilian attacks, using military equipment on civilians, but it fails to account the horrific rape crimes committed on women? Even though the UN established rape as a war crime in 1998. After seeing this documentary, I admit, I lost quite a bit of sleep. The footage shown of the attacks, the executions and rapes made me realise that we as humans have reached a point where disgusting crimes are committed and no action is taken despite every piece of evidence condemning the Sri Lankan government. Just a quick note for Channel 4 – thank you for all the documentaries and global issues you have covered, not only in special coverages like this but also in other fields such as Unreported World – its been a big help to my A-Level Sociology topic on Global Development!

One random question that I have raised and seem to be confused about. Why has there not be an international investigation taken place in Sri Lanka? Why has it taken 2 years? Just want to learn more about Sri Lanka!

Dear Channel 4 team, Thank for the courage to make this documentary – I will remember it forever and I hope it changes minds/thoughts across the world. I just don’t know what to say or do, I feel so so sad. Part of me feels that there is no hope for the human race and part of me feels energised that we cannot give up and we all can do a little bit to make the world a better place where such events never happen again. I believe that everything in life happens for a reason, but I simply cannot understand the reason behind this.

War crimes are bad. It is very sad to see the comments of the so called diaspora. they want a seperate land and they want another war. This is all while they have luxuries in the western world and the poor relatives living in poverty and fear amidst the war in the most rural and under developed North east. why cant you come back and share your moneys and luxuries with them. the true tamil civilians living in North of Sri Lanka do not want war. they want to build up their lives peacefully. STOP BEING SOOOOOO SELFISH>
