World Ignores Genocide of Sri Lanka’s Tamil Population

(SALEM, Ore.) – The spirit of the world’s fragile populace is broken and failing to respond the right way to the most dire problems.

The terrible problems taking place in Palestine, which we write about frequently, are just one part of a torturous puzzle of bad intent born from human greed that spans parts of the Middle east.

This is especially easy to believe when examining the genocidal deaths of more than 300,000 Tamil men, women and children, estimated to have been killed or disappeared.

In 2009 alone, more than 35,000 Tamils are estimated to have violently or needlessly lost their lives. Because of the fear and desperation put forth by this, about 1.1 Million Tamils have fled the country.

The numbers are horrible, and include over 600,000 Tamil internal refugees (Internally displaced or evicted). And while this has taken place, more than 20,000 Tamil children have been orphaned and denied the possibility of living a normal life with their families.

And along with this, more than 35,000 Tamil widows.

World Without Focus

The world stares with curiosity at TV screens that play meaningless programs that insult real life and ignore human struggle. They may show brave Libyan Revolutionaries wage war with their totalitarian government; yet little is said when top-level peace activists are slaughtered like sacrificial lambs in Gaza.

In the same manner, the poor Tamil people of Sri Lanka are bludgeoned and slaughtered without world attention.

Like the image on the right of a Tamil woman lying dead on the wreckage of her motorcycle, or the child hanging by her neck, we see what the worst of Hollywood’s horror films could never begin to emulate, because it is real.

This is nothing humankind should ever witness, though without question, must.

Do we even have a right to ignore it?

There are many brave activists hard at work in this world, people who unquestionably inspire me with their sense of humanity, and they would say the only thing ignoring it achieves, is its continuance.

Somewhere along the way, American news networks decided they really weren’t responsible for monitoring the world, often choosing to rely on government news releases and other often worthless forms of communication that are always structured to promote image and reduce liability.

Sri Lanka’s violence took place in indescribable ways and while the government makes all of its claims against this minority population and its bands of freedom fighters, the images of the resulting toll on human flesh and life that Sri Lanka’s military forces left behind for cameras to record, are more than heinous, they brutally defy the senses.

No acts committed by the bands of fighters hailing from this population could justify these actions.

And for the record, there are images that are worse than these, that I chose not to include.

According to Wikipedia: Sri Lanka became an independent nation in 1948. Since independence, the political relationship between Sinhalese and Sri Lankan Tamil community has been strained. Sri Lanka has been unable to contain its ethnic violence as it escalated from sporadic terrorism to mob violence, and finally to civil war. The Sri Lankan Civil War has several underlying causes: the ways in which modern ethnic identities have been made and remade since the colonial period, rhetorical wars over archaeological sites and place name etymologies, and the political use of the national past. The civil war has resulted in the death of over 70,000 people and, according to human rights groups such as Human Rights Watch, the forced disappearance of thousands of others (see: White van abductions in Sri Lanka). Since 1983, Sri Lanka has also witnessed massive civilian displacements of more than a million people, with eighty percent of them being Sri Lankan Tamils.

Forced Starvation

According to reports and testimony sent to our newsroom from Sri Lanka, another twisted aspect of this persecution involves forced starvation, which laps at the heels of human depravity in its worst, most torturous form.

All of these behaviors from the government are illegal under numerous clauses in the United Nations Human Rights Declaration.

Of course after looking at the photographs accompanying this story, you may conclude that those who suffer and die from a lack of food, who should be the worst off in any place at any time, are not necessarily the worst off here.

And beyond the starvation and death, the rampant slaughter of men, women and children; there are also allegations of horrific conditions inside of what could only be described as concentration camps.

Our source in Sri Lanka explains how thousands of families (including infants) were and in many cases still are being kept behind barbed wire fenced internment camps operated by Sri Lankan Military.

This practice initially took place in the month following the aftermath of the war.

"Half a million Tamils kept under military rule in Jaffna peninsula (Northern Sri Lanka) that had been described as an open prison."

We are told thousands are still in custody – detained Guantanamo style- without trial, suffering widespread abuses.

This is taking place as an economic embargo imposed on traditional Tamil areas has remained in effect for more than two decades.

The embargo impacts supplies of food, medicine, fuel, electricity and other essential items controlled by the military.

In truth, what are economic embargoes- if not just another form of war?

War Crimes

Children killed in a Sri Lanka air force bombing.

Amnesty International said on 12 April 2011 that a UN report on accountability for war crimes committed in the Sri Lankan armed conflict must be made public. A panel of experts had submitted their findings to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

“Sri Lankans must be allowed to see the panel’s findings. The report concerns a critical period in their recent history and they deserve to read it in full,” said Sam Zarifi, Amnesty International’s Asia-Pacific Director.

“Ban Ki-moon said that ‘accountability is an essential foundation for durable peace and reconciliation in Sri Lanka’. He must stick to his word – accounting for violations committed in the recent conflict is the first step to future reconciliation”.

The UN Panel of Experts was appointed in June 2010 to advise the Secretary General on accountability issues as they relate to violations of international human rights and humanitarian law alleged in the final stages of the armed conflict in Sri Lanka, which ended in May 2009.

The panel was also asked to recommend a course of action that would ensure accountability, in line with a joint commitment made by President Rajapaksa of Sri Lanka and Ban Ki-moon on his visit to Sri Lanka in May 2009.

Amnesty International called on the UN to launch an independent international investigation into alleged crimes, including the killing of more than 10,000 civilians; the LTTE’s use of civilians as human shields and conscription of child soldiers; Sri Lankan army shelling of areas densely populated by civilians; and severe deprivation of food, water and medical care for people trapped by fighting.

Of course Israel has an established history of always claiming ‘human shields’ when caught in heavy attacks in civilian populations by the United Nations. The numbers also vary greatly from what our sources report, and that too is highly typical when examining allegations of state sponsored terrorism.

Sri Lanka Denies Charges

And as if right on cue, the government of Sri Lankan protested the appointment of a UN Panel, claiming that it was “uncalled for and unwarranted” and ultimately refused to fully cooperate.

This underscores three clear points;

  • that the United Nations is willing to accept numbers largely in contrast with what people on the ground are reporting,
  • that the agency is powerless to compel a government to deal with allegations of genocide where the human count is in six figure increments,
  • and that genocide in the world is unregulated.
Tamil Tigers

Logo of the Liberation Tigers of
Tamileelam (LTTE)

According to Wikipedia, The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam: (தமிழீழ விடுதலைப் புலிகள்), commonly known as the LTTE or the Tamil Tigers, was a separatist organization formerly based in northern Sri Lanka.

Founded in May 1976 by Vellupillai Prabhakaran, the LTTE waged a secessionist campaign with a goal of creating Tamil Eelam, which would have been an independent state in the north and east of Sri Lanka for Eelam Tamils, who are native to Sri Lanka, and also for Tamils of Indian origin.

This goal of separation evolved into the Sri Lankan Civil War, which ran from 1983 until the LTTE was defeated by the Sri Lankan Military in May 2009.

For decades there have been reports of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam targeting civilians, launched suicide attacks at buses and railway stations, and attacking those who speak out against them, Amnesty International reports.

Members of the LTTE who died during Sri Lanka’s civil war from 1983 to 2009.

They’re also known for the use of child soldiers.

The same group says the Sri Lankan government forces and their armed affiliates also acted with impunity, engaging in extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances and torturing those suspected of links to the LTTE.

“Impunity for violations has been the rule throughout Sri Lanka’s long civil war. The way to turn a new page in the country’s history and restore public confidence is to deliver truth and justice,” said Sam Zarifi.

“The panel’s work on accountability issues in Sri Lanka should mark the beginning, not the end, of a process of accounting for violations.”

Zarifi added, “By publicizing the panel of expert’s report, and moving toward an independent, international accountability mechanism, the UN would send a strong message that international law is relevant, and would reinforce trends of accountability for human rights violations globally.”

That would be good in a world where human rights violations are delivered with illegal weapons on a routine basis, some supplied by the United States, while others are actually supplied and delivered by the United States in places like Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Illegal Weapons

Victims of Chemical weapon attacks

In Sri Lanka the illegal weapons allegations against the government claim the usage of banned weapons – Cluster bombs, white phosphorus, heavy weapon usage (artillery) on densely populated civilian areas, and also the reported use of chemical weapons.

Evidence according to witnesses, includes mass graves and systematic violations of fundamental human rights that to this day, two years after the end of the civil war, have not been investigated.

Perhaps to ensure that no investigations are ever launched, the government of Sri Lanka has banned international media from entering the heavy conflict areas.

Our sources also talk about what could only be described as a systematic destruction of Infrastructure.

Tamil Homes that were bombed by the Sri Lankan air force; many were occupied.

This includes military action, like indiscriminate and wanton air attacks on traditional Tamil areas.

This has been taking place for more than 2 decades.

The government of Sri Lanka thus denies hundreds of thousands of citizens a right to their livelihoods and also the chance to attend schools, visit hospitals, enter libraries, temples, churches and houses.

Those are hard conditions for a people who have watched government thugs enter and destroy their villages.

Sri Lanka and Human Rights- on the Radar

Again, the story is highly reminiscent of Palestine, and we media must keep this in our sites and take the research that Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch issues for our use and run with it. Genocide, in the 21st Century; it is a shameful reality that can not be arrested soon enough.

The world needs to be strong and take a solid, united position toward all governments that are responsible for human rights abuse.

Our source said, "Sri Lanka’s president and its army don’t know what is meant by HUMANITY what they know is kill who ever asks the question, the government is purely running based racist sinhala only motto."

"Their government is made up of LIARS. HUMANS will never forgive Sri Lanka’s activity against the HUMANITY."

Sri Lanka is playing a dishonest, evasive game of politics, and our source says the government lies to the whole world when they both started the war, and then said a "Political Solution" will be given to the Tamils.

"But now its almost two years gone after the war still the government is not ready to any political solution . Still they want the Tamils as their slaves. Still more than 600,000 Tamil people are Internal Refugees."

Again, reminiscent of the conflict between Israel and Palestine, in Sri Lanka the army took large amounts of civilian lands for what they designate as ‘HIGHLY PROTECTED ZONES’ where people are not allowed.

All of a society’s typical patterns of life are disrupted by the turmoil. People on both sides died. The conflict is over, at the very least the government of Sri Lanka should live up to promises it made and do what it can to help normalize life for all citizens.

The main industry of the Tamils is agriculture; again like Palestine they can not access the very land they have historically farmed.

Didn’t we learn during the Second World War?

I think at least three million Cambodians slaughtered in a genocidal rage that swept through that nation in the 1970′s would tell you the world didn’t learn a thing.

Addendum:

Not previously noted in this article; it is important to note that the Tamil sovereign state in the pre-colonial era involved disillusioned and marginalised Tamil youths had to fighting; with their hands tied back, unlike either the Jews to regain their lost state of Israel or the Libyans where international assistance was swift.

To quote

“… statement that the country had been united for 2,500 years flies in the face of history. There was for some centuries an independent Tamil kingdom and the chronicles report frequent wars between Singhalese and Tamil kings. Separate Singhalese and Tamil communities existed on the island from the pre-colonial era until the administrative unification of the island by the British in 1833.” (Supplement to Professor Virginia Leary Report on a Mission to Sri Lanka 1981-83 published by the ICJ)

Sir Hugh Cleghorn, the First British Colonial Secretary said in his 1799 minutes to His Majesty’s government, three years after it usurped their lands,

“Two different nations, from a very ancient period, have divided between them the possession of the island: the Sinhalese inhabiting the interior in its Southern and Western parts from the river Wallouve to that of Chillow, and the Malabars [another name for Tamils] who possess the Northern and Eastern Districts. These two nations differ entirely in their religions, language and manners’. Ponnambalam, Satchi (1983) Sri Lanka: the national question and the Tamil liberation struggle (London: Zed Books)

Sir.Emerson James Tennent, British colonial secretary of Ceylon 1845- 1850, wrote, “Indigenous Tamil people have lived for more than 2,500 years in the northern and eastern parts of present-day Sri Lanka (north-east), known as the Tamil hereditary area. In pre-colonial days there was the Tamil Kingdom in the north-east (Jaffna) and two Sinhalese kingdoms in the south, called Kotte and Kandy. Drawings and maps from the time of the Greek explorer Ptolemy, and later from the period when the British came to the island, show how the areas of the Tamils and the Sinhalese were recorded separately from antiquity”. Emerson, Tennent J (1859) Ceylon, Volume 2 (London: Longman Press)

Please see this attachment for an extract from a Tamil translation written by a retired deputy surveyor general of Sri Lanka for one such evidence from the Colombo museum, which may have been now destroyed by the Sinhala chauvinists.

When the British supplanted the Portuguese and the Dutch, they annexed the Tamil state to the rest of the island in 1833 by the Colebrooke-Cameron Commission.

David Kariyawasam April 26, 2011 7:43 pm (Pacific time)

All the human rights campaigners and LTTE supporters are all crying about human rights now making false accusations against a governmenet that won the war against terror. Where were all these people when the LTTE were bombing civilian buildings, slaughtering civilians, forcibly recruiting child soldiers. We the people of Sri Lanka fully support the democratically elected government fo sri lanka on its war against terror. After 30 years sri lankans can go to any part of the country without fear. Its best that when you report you actually interview the people that live in sri lanka (who could not be happier that peace has returned) as opposed to economic refugees in foreign countries who’s main goal is to tarnish the image of sri lanka.

K. Narasiman, Norway April 26, 2011 7:00 pm (Pacific time)

Libya: UN team to start probe of human rights abuses. What a double standard ?. Here we are after 2 years, still yearning for an investigation into atrocities…and no action even after countless pleas, letters, human chains, petitions, protests all over the world, people even committed suicide to pursuade for an investigation. But nothing. But the UN team is already in Libya for the same reason. They just abandoned the tamil community including the most of the media, and the world.

Thanks for your report. This shows what happens to people who expose the truth against the GOSL such as col. Sarath Fonseca, Lasantha Wikramathunga. Not only thamila people, but also sinhala people also not allowed to freely tell their opinions. Dictatorship in the making in srilanka

sainavneet April 26, 2011 2:15 pm (Pacific time)

Why can’t the government of srilanka allow for an international investigation, if they have nothing to hide ?. Why is so many countries including US, UK, Australia, Canada, Norway, France and Germany, are so adament in giving a pass to the srilankan government even after a UN panel has accused the government of atrocities ?. There won’t be smoke without a fire. Why are the countries so reluctant to look for that fire ?. The whole world watched as thousands of tamils died. It will EVER haunt the humanity, if they don’t act. God will punish those who are responsible and those who went along with atrocities. It is really sad that the world is in such an inhumane position.

In colombo, tamil people are being harrassed by the police asking them to sign on a petition against UN report. This is srilanka. UN chief said that for an investigation into war crimes, he needs the permission of srilanka ????. How in the world, is he expecting srilanka to agree to that ?.

While government forces screened civilians for suspected rebels, some civilians were summarily executed and some of the women may have been raped, the report said. There is nothing much going to happen with this UN report. most probably no country will ask for an investigation and then everything will go back to same. unless of course, people in this world open their eyes, say something to their MPs, senators/reps to intervene. It is already too late (2 years passed), for collecting any evidence especially srilanka has been systematically destroying all and every trace of the war from the land for these 2 years. I don’t think much will happen.

Shan April 25, 2011 7:41 pm (Pacific time)

You have mistaken my point. I just quoted the whole sentence. But my point was, the government forces shelled at innocent civilians indiscriminately and even at UN and red cross. Which is clearly a war crime

UN : Hospitals, UN centers and Red Cross ships were deliberately shelled by government forces, prisoners shot in the head and women raped, while Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelan (LTTE) leaders used 330,000 civilians as a human shield, they said.

Oh dear god…mass murderers. I just read that the UN report is released. I can’t imagine what those people went through. If there is a god, then he will punish all who are responsible.
Here is the BBC report. I don’t know whether i put it properly here.

Tim you don’t have to be ashamed. Your country and most of the western countries, we all enjoy the freedom of press, speech, practice religion and so on. But this is not the case in srilanka. You have to be proud of your country that and also for allowing many of us srilankans to live and escape the atrocities in our birthplace. From the bottom of heart, We all thank the western nations for this great deed. We also salute you and others for reporting on the atrocities, but we can’t demand anyone/media to concentrate on us. But you may be able to do it.

Tim King April 25, 2011 3:54 pm (Pacific time)

Today U.S. news agencies; FOX, MSNBC, ABC, Wall St Journal, Huff Post, CBS; all of them- carried a breaking story about a model who painted her baby boy’s toenails pink.

People are dying and suffering in this world and the American agencies think the toenails are important, as genocide takes place and remains unresolved. I am sorry to all of you real people writing on this story, I am ashamed that my nation is so misguided.

Shyamalan April 25, 2011 3:21 pm (Pacific time)

From the most comments by singalese and tamil We can come to a conclusion that these two communities cannot live together anymore. therefore better leave tamil and singala in sparate nation. They can be friendly nation side by side.

I have been to the North. And it really is a military oppression going on there. Its really a terrible thing to see that entire region. They keep Jaffna as reasonably ‘normal’ to fool the world into thinking that ‘everything is fine’ in the North. Dont fall for it. Alot of naive people visit Jaffna ONLY and then tell everyone that the North is fine. I know the real situation as i have been to certain areas isolated from the rest of Sri Lanka and the world.

Narmatha April 25, 2011 1:45 pm (Pacific time)

LTTE is a socalled terrorist group. Government of srilanka is not (atleast not yet). So does it justify it for the government to kill innocent people, because a rebel group did so ?. There is no difference between a government and a rebel group here. Then why not call the GOSL a terror organization ?. Furthermore, compare the number of innocent tamils died in the war to sinhalese.

Guna, Norway April 25, 2011 1:04 pm (Pacific time)

kushan April 25, 2011 1:03 pm (Pacific time)

This report doesn’t reflect true image of Sri Lanka. LTTE has committed so much atrocities by using suicide bombers, keeping civilian population trapped as human shield to protect their top brass, planting bombs in buses, killing innocent civilians using bus bombs http://www.asiantribune.com/news/2011/04/25/ltte-involved-trafficking-drugs-and-human-beings-europol-te-sat-report-2011 http://www.asiantribune.com/news/2011/04/19/final-days-vanni-600-tamils-shot-and-killed-stray-dogs-first-person-revelation that is what one of the trap TNA member has to say

Anapayan R, CA April 25, 2011 12:07 pm (Pacific time)

now I hope people around the world can see these images and realize what really happened in srilanka. Though I don’t think any country will try do anything about this. even if they do, too little too late.

Nadine D April 25, 2011 11:15 am (Pacific time)

hi, please post if there is any updates about the war in srilanka. thank you

Gayathri Wijayasinghe April 25, 2011 9:40 am (Pacific time)

I have rented houses to tamil people for many years. They were the necest people I have ever seen. They are very hard working and respectful. They bring food/gift to us during their festivals and we also do the same. My daughter one day left her daughter with them, when we all have to go somewhere. We were like a big family. Once, during a round up in dehiwala, police arrested my tenant’s son for no reason. I felt really bad that I couldn’t do anything to stop them, because he is an innocent school student. I knew him for more than 10 years. I sometimes feel guilty as a community we didn’t do much for our tamil friends. I don’t understand why some of us hate these people so much. We are all srilankans.

Rajitha April 25, 2011 8:58 am (Pacific time)

hey thank your excellent report

Ravi Nanthakumar April 25, 2011 7:25 am (Pacific time)

we tamils are in foreign countries because of illtreatment and war in srilanka. Why are there are many sinhala people in foreign countries ?. Even if it is because of the war, now that the war is over, you all sinhala patriots can go back srilanka. There are huge populations of sinhala people in australia, US, canada, uk etc.

Gayathri Wijayasinghe April 25, 2011 5:51 am (Pacific time)

I have rented homes for thamila people in lanka for many years. They are the most nicest people. They bring food/gifts during their festivals. We also do the same even while the war is going. My daughter left her baby once with them alone, when we had to go somewhere. One of my tenant’s son was arrested in police round up in dehiwala, I couldn’t do anything, I was helpless and I felt really bad about it. He is an innocent school student. So I never understood why some of us are hating our fellow countrymen and women. Atleast now, we should leave them alone in their native lands for good.

Raj Palaniswamy April 25, 2011 5:42 am (Pacific time)

BANNED CHEMICAL, ARTILLARY, CLUSTER BOMBS USED AGAINST TAMILS BY GOSL Grisly Photos Reveal Genocide by Sri Lankan Government Against Tamil People http://www.salem-news.com/articles/august072010/srilanka-violence-mv.php

Geetha April 25, 2011 5:11 am (Pacific time)

Mr Stuart and Menaka stop you idiotful speaking. LTTE never rapped single sinhala women. they are disciplined organisation. They are fighting for Freedom. Genocide against Tamils is equal to serbenica, Rwanda genocide. Stop lying that ltte killed srilankan people.

Anjana subramaniam April 25, 2011 5:05 am (Pacific time)

@Menaka, These are the same people who are responsible for the war. People who were pissed of the growth of tamil community in every way. People who were jealous of tamil unity and status in the world. When ceylon got independence, 70% of government jobs were held by tamils. Then GOSL started its illtreatment. The cut off points for university entry was marked 30 for sinhalese and 90 for tamils. Still our students got in to universities because of their perseverance. All this made GOSL more angry. If you can see from "Menaka’s" use of words and curses, what type mentality is there towards tamils in srilanka.

Niranjen, uk April 25, 2011 4:25 am (Pacific time)

Here come "Menaka" with all her hatred with the tamils. There is no point in talking to people like this who have no rational on what they talking about. She said tamils don’t have a religion, then said hindu which is suitable to hindi speaking people. What a stupid arguement. ya true..Mr. Tim, aljazeera, channel 4 news are giving news about srilanka to increase their ratings… as if there is no other events happening all around the world and they want to concoct stories about srilanka. Whenever some one tells the truth of srilanka, here comes all the haters.

Niranjen April 25, 2011 4:16 am (Pacific time)

Stuart, so only thing missing in those camps is a mall and theme park ?. May be they have it and you didn’t see it. On your invitation to visit srilanka, Oh ya we can come and see for ourselves, that is of course if we can return. Don’t worry UN panel report is on its way which will elaborate on the "luxuries" of the camps. Oh again, you would simply just deny it…living on denials. haha

Niranjen April 25, 2011 4:07 am (Pacific time)

Stuart, Ya…there is no genocide in srilanka. Everything and everyone is all happy and smiling. What a paradise !!. Don’t tell us that we don’t know anything because we are in london and canada. We came here bcos of the atrocities and we experienced everything. If everything is ok, why won’t you allow the international media to go freely (not with army escort) and talk to these people. What happened to editor Lasantha and so many others ?. May be rebels killed him right ?. How about the people disappearing even after war ended ? oh may be the ghost of the rebels killing them ?.

Menaka April 24, 2011 10:33 pm (Pacific time)

What a stupid title "World Ignores Genocide of Sri Lanka’s Tamil Population" next time write "World Ignores Genocide of Sri Lanka’s Sinhala Population" What happnd to the sinhala villagers the tamils killed?? who’s talking for them? this article does not reflect any of the violence done by the ltte. Tamils are a bunch of greedy bastard if we give them some they want more and more and finnaly takes all if they cant get it they take if forcibly. they are the most cunning ppl next to muslims. tamils don’t own any country they dont have one. they are a bunch of displaces ppl who dont have a mother country. they dont even have a religion. there religion is hindu. more suitable for hindi speaking ppl. so they want to take revenge from the world. Those poor ppl are dead b coz of the stupid Tamils living abroad who helped the LTTE. u’re the one who did this that blood is in ur hands. most of the tamils living abroad are there saying they cant living in sri lanka coz of the war. now the war is over they are scared coz they will have to go back to sri lanka and they dont want to b coz of the luxury they find in canada and uk. so they want to keep the world informed of a war goin on in sri lanka which is actually not there. so they can live in canada an uk. The news channels have nothing to report and they take small stories and stupid and lame to keep ppl interested in there programmes. that why you find the same story being repeated over fox news and channel 4 also aljazeera and cnn.

Stuart April 24, 2011 10:17 pm (Pacific time)

Niranjen How do you know the pictures are Tamil? Maybe should come here and c for yourself without blabbering. You people stays in the UK or Canada and lie to the world telling the government is killing Tamils. What happened to the Sinhalese and Muslim people the LTTE killed??. Why aren’t you talking about that?. There no genocide here and you know that. Stop lying and help the Tamils in Sri Lanka if you are really a Tamil. I’ve been all around Sri Lanka and I’ve been here for 10 years. I’ve seen many things which you people living in luxury have never seen. So don’t tell me about the situation here. Illiyaranee Well I don’t care if you believe me or not. That is what I saw. The Tamil people there have everything. The only thing I found was there were no proper facilities for the volunteer doctors and nurses working there. The Tamils in the camps don’t have homes yes coz of the LTTE took over their houses and used them as barracks. The people there have more than enough food. I was excess food being wasted in dumpsters everywhere. There are several vocational training institutions inside the camp. And schools and preschools for children. There’s even a Kovil and I myself participated in a Puja.

Srithar April 24, 2011 7:11 pm (Pacific time)

Good luck anonymous. Ya they should release the panel report soon

Jeyam April 24, 2011 3:12 pm (Pacific time)

Thanks Tim for bring out the facts. Tamils will be ever indebted to you for your work. Hope the international community will open its eyes and stop the genocide of Tamils in Sri Lanka.

Anonymous April 24, 2011 3:02 pm (Pacific time)

I just signed the petition urging Ban Ki Moon, UN Secretary-General to release the special report on Sri Lanka immediately. Last June a panel of experts was appointed to advise the UN Secretary-General on accountability issues in Sri Lanka. A few days ago they presented Ban Ki Moon with a report of their findings, immediately provoking the Sri Lankan government to dismiss the report as ‘fundamentally flawed’. Along with the reports from the prominent human rights organizations, we hope that this UN report is a precursor to an international investigation into allegations of war crimes committed by both sides during the final stages of the war. Whilst we welcome the UNSG’s office saying the panel’s report will be made public, we are dismayed that the Sri Lankan government will be given prior access to the report – enabling them to prepare their own response to coincide with the release. Help us put pressure on Ban Ki Moon to release the report NOW by signing this petition http://www.srilankacampaign.org/takeaction.htm
This message was sent from the Sri Lanka Peace Campaign website, www.srilankacampaign.org. Please report any abuse of this service.

Mr. Tim thanks for taking interest in srilankan news and writing this.

Niranjen, London April 24, 2011 2:32 pm (Pacific time)

Illiyaranee, I agree. That guy has to watch the aljazeera report on srilanka where the reporter was not allowed to go or speak to those people alone and visit the camps. They only show what they want you to see. nothing else. You put it well…It is ironic to see a social worker saying that the displaced people have "everything" and "living happily".

Bhoomika Saju April 24, 2011 2:08 pm (Pacific time)

it is disheartening to see all these deaths happened in our neighbouring country. May be our government open the eyes, and do something atleast now. So that another war doesn’t kill innocent lives. Hard to see ceylonese thamil people getting killed for years now

Illiyaranee Shanmugam April 24, 2011 2:01 pm (Pacific time)

Stuart, How do you know those pictures aren’t tamil ?. You said the clothes look old, because they were not living with all the luxuries. You went an IDP camp and people are living happily. I don’t know, may be we all should go and live in that camp if we want to live happily. How can you say anyone who lost their home or displaced, is happy living in a camp ?. That shows how good of an IDP worker you are. May be those are the "model" camps that the government show to you.

1. This post does not talk the 1000′s of killing of Sinhala and Muslim villagers done by the LTTE. And what about the bus bombs and killings of political leaders??? 2. How do you say the pictures are of Tamils. There are pictures who look more like Sinhala or Muslim people. 3. Some of the pictures are so old. this can be judged by what they are wearing. 4. Im a social worker and ive been to these IDP camps and the people there live happily. They have food and everything. 5. This article is biased to the LTTE and i do not trust this site any more.

What I don’t understand is, why the UN hesitated to do anything during the war and even now keeping the mouth shut ?. Hopefully, people around the world see all these atrocities and demand for an action.

Mahen London April 22, 2011 10:46 pm (Pacific time)

Tim, I am deeply indebted to you for bringing out the truth of this Genocide of an ancient community in that beautiful Island in the Indian Ocean. Geopolitics of the region favours stability of the Island Politics and therefore the regional Players such as India and China are quite happy for the liquidation of one community by the other as that would allow them to do business with one head of state than a democratic sharing of power between the the major communities of Singhalese and Tamils. as you have confirmed in the addendum the two communities lived as two separate sovereign states until the British colonial Govt. unified them for administartive convenience but left behind a powder keg at Independence that is now taking its toll by annihilation of the minority by the majority community. Hope the UN will now step in to save this helpless Tamil minority to survive in their own land of birth.

Appapillai Rajendra April 22, 2011 10:30 pm (Pacific time)

Congratulations, Tim. You have really opened the Pandora’s Box that had been kept securely closed by the excellent management of information by the Sri Lankan Government (SLG).
The SLG had always taken a disingenuous approach of perpetrating deliberate misrepresentation of facts and floated on lies hoodwinking the world that the LTTE was the foremost Terrorist Organization in the world, blaming it for the countless killings and political assassinations which it actually was not involved. The SLG launched a well-orchestrated international propaganda campaign to convince the International Community that the Tamil struggle was nothing more than naked terrorism. Playing on the sensibilities and anxieties of western nations about global terrorism, Sri Lanka obtained global sympathy by propagating a view that she too was a victim of a similar phenomenon.
While thanking you for your excellent truth revealing article, please take the time to read the following topics I had contributed in the Online Journal ‘Sangam.org’ that give the ground realities the Tamils faced during the three decades of unjust persecution and genocide.

This is ridicules. Do you know some of these pictures are of Sinhalese children’s who killed by Tamil LTTE. This writer purposefully ignored all the killing done by LTTE for more than 30 years. Once they killed more than 30 unarmed Buddhist monks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aranthalawa_Massacre). LTTE wiped out Tamil politicians almost single handed. This is a tainted report. Now there is no more LTTE thanks to MR regime. We are rely grateful to the SLGOV that they finished LTTE.

Arun April 22, 2011 9:06 pm (Pacific time)

God punish the people who did these atrocities. thank you for your article

Ahilan Sivaganesan April 22, 2011 8:33 pm (Pacific time)

Tim, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for writing this article. I am a medical student and a 2nd generation Tamil, and I have been involved in attempts to spread awareness about this genocide… however the progress is slow (as it must be for the Palestinians). When Tamils speak out on behalf of their own, they are often dismissed… so it is wonderful to see a non-Tamil shed light on the genocide. If our human rights and advocacy organizations can work with you to help raise more awareness, please let us know. Thanks!

Faruk April 22, 2011 5:24 pm (Pacific time)

Thanks a lot for this article. atleast now the world would find out what happened, which is already late

Sabratha T April 22, 2011 5:20 pm (Pacific time)

my lord…I can’t watch these pictures. I knew something was going in this country. Never knew this was happening. How can a government kill their own people. Arrest all who are responsible. As someone else said why did our media ignored this issue ?. shame on them

Robert M April 22, 2011 5:02 pm (Pacific time)

I just saw that there is UN panel report which was postponed at the request of srilanka today. Why fear if yoy have nothing to hide srilanka ??

Tatiana April 22, 2011 4:58 pm (Pacific time)

I hope president Obama see this story and do something. Here I’m thinking Libya was the worse…no this is more than anything. God bless these people

Hari April 22, 2011 4:54 pm (Pacific time)

@Ragunathan, "go to srilanka and get the truth". Are you kidding ?. Srilanka has many people like you who just deny the truth and does not even care about that. Even the UN panel still can’t go to these places. At maximum,You would get a military escort tour of all "flowers and white picket fence". You can’t get an independent access to the people. Tim, Thanks for the article.

Matt King April 22, 2011 2:40 pm (Pacific time)

Dear Tim,
Please send this article to President Obama, Secretary Clinton, NSC Advisor Samantha Powers, and Senators Kerry and Lugar. What were they doing when this GENOCIDE was taking place?

Tim King: Matt, (That is my son’s name by the way, had to do a quick double take) I will follow your suggestion and keep pushing this article around the world, thanks for the suggestion.

‘’ …. Chandra R. de Silva, in contrast, implies that Buddhist monastic opposition to a non-unitary state has contributed to the conflict. He appreciates the reasons for this, but pleads for a system of monastic education that would expose monks to other religions and cultures. ….. I have no hesitation in recommending this volume as a serious contribution to the understanding of one of the most complex and intractable conflicts in the world’’, Dr Elizabeth Harris(Liverpool Hope University), Review(2007) of Buddhism, Conflict and Violence in Modern Sri Lanka(2006)

Eelamagal April 22, 2011 1:22 pm (Pacific time)

You are a dumbass.

Ragunathan April 22, 2011 10:07 am (Pacific time)

This article is totally wrong. Most of these photos are killings by the LTTE TERRORISTS. Those small children were victims of the brutal LTTE killings. Shame on this article. Go to Sri Lanka and find the truth before publishing these kind of FALSE.

Saleem April 22, 2011 9:00 am (Pacific time)

Salem-News.com does a service to the oppressed of the world. US protects Israel whenever it bombs Palestinians after occupying their land and Russia and China protect Sri Lanka. Only reporters like Tim King do justice to victims.
