Rally of Justice for Genocide Victims of Thamil Eelam

Press Release

April 30, 2010

On May 18th, 2011 the Tamil Diaspora of North America will be rallying at the United Nations, in New York, to demand an international independent investigation for Genocide carried out against the Tamil people. May 18th, 2009, marked the end of the Sri Lankan ethnic civil war between the Tamils, and Sinhalese. In the name of fighting terror, the government of Sri Lanka indiscriminately bombarded the Tamil homeland of Eelam, eliminating over 40,000 lives in a matter of three days! During, and after, the final stages of the war, hundreds of thousands of Tamil civilians, and combatant survivors were subjected to extreme forms of torture, gang rapes, and extrajudicial killings. While these atrocities were going on, NGOs, rights groups, and the international media were barred from entering these areas.

Recently, a UN leak on Sri Lanka confirmed the crimes against humanity and genocide carried out in Sri Lanka. Also, included in the report was it’s failure on preventing the massacre that took place back in 2009. Upon the leak, UN chief ban Ki-moon stated that he cannot order an international probe into the killing of the tens of thousands of civilians during Sri Lanka’s final assault on Tamil Eelam.  The report also stated that "this is a grave assault on the entire regime of international law designed to protect individual dignity during both war and peace."

Therefore, we want answers, and we want them now. Though the voice of the Tamils have been silenced in Sri Lanka, the voice of the Tamil Diaspora will continue to carry on the struggle for justice in the international arena. Brothers and sisters, you are welcome to join us.
