UNYSA is organising an exciting all-day ‘Model UNA-UK’ event on Saturday 26 March 2011 at the University of Manchester.

The conference will give UNYSA members a unique opportunity to draft UNYSA’s policy priorities for the year 2011-12 using MUN-style debating procedures.

Those policies agreed by participants will be sent to UNYSA’s parent organisation, UNA-UK, for adoption and action, so your ideas could become an integral part of UNA-UK’s work in lobbying the UK government on peace, development and human rights issues and in pushing for reform to make the UN stronger, more credible and more effective.

At the event, UNYSA will also be discussing its brand new national Model UN strategy. If you’re passionate about MUN you won’t want to miss this chance to get involved!

Attendance is free but you have to register. Click here to book your place today

UNA-UK pushes for further action on Libya

UNA-UK has been closely following the situation in Libya, where thousands of civilians are said to have been killed since mid-February. Medical equipment and food is in short supply and well over 100,000 people have already fled the country. The UN has launched an urgent humanitarian appeal.

Having urged the international community to take strong action, UNA-UK welcomed the Security Council’s decision to refer the situation to the International Criminal Court. Amidst ongoing discussions on establishing a ‘no-fly zone’, UNA-UK is now urging states to do so only with broad international backing, including from Arab states, and ideally through a UN resolution.

New World – now online

UNA-UK’s magazine is now online, with all the print content plus web-only features.

The Spring 2011 issue leads with an exclusive article by UK Foreign Secretary William Hague, and contributions by Des Browne (former UK Defence Secretary), Abiodun Williams (US Institute of Peace), Laura Padoan (UN Refugee Agency) and Haji Saghir Alam (ADD International).

In the cover story, the editor wonders whether the world can handle further population growth, and in ‘Talking Points’, we feature an analysis of what we got and what we didn’t get from the climate conference in Cancun last December. Click here to read the magazine.
