On Tuesday 19 October 2010 HE Professor GL Peiris, Minister of External Affairs, Sri Lanka, delivered the Keynote Address of the 1st IISS-Sri Lanka Foreign Ministry Dialogue.

This was followed by three formal sessions of the Dialogue on “Post-Conflict Progress in Sri Lanka”, “Sri Lanka-UK Bilateral Relations: Future Perspectives” and “Countering Terrorism & Transnational Terrorist Front Organizations”. These sessions were led by members of the Sri Lankan delegation and IISS/UK experts.

HE Professor GL Peiris was appointed Minister for External Affairs on 3 May 2010. He has been a Member of Parliament since 1994 and has held five ministerial appointments. He was also the leader of the Sri Lankan government delegation which held six rounds of talks with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in 2002 –2003. HE Professor GL Peiris has a D.Phil degree from Oxford, where he was a Rhodes Scholar in 1968-1971. He was also a Visiting Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford, in 1980-1981.
